All the yellow planes are tow planes for the gliders, they're getting blown around by the wind and would have been cartwheeling over the tarmac if the pilots hadn't got them out of there and into the air. Looks the gliders (white) were either tied down or had enough people to hold them down to prevent them from getting tossed around too.

I wish I knew, I haven't had a chance to drive around the area and spot locations for the new runway yet.

I'm not around today either, so I'll be missing the opening of the runway.

Well, whatever rumour you may have heard, I sure didn't see anything good from McCall way.

The taxiway from the terminal to the new runway has a great viewing area near the Westjet building.

No A380. I waited around 30 mins after the first plane landed just incase, but didn't see anything. Too bad, knew that rumour was too good to be true.

Wow my rumours were way off, I had heard that Stephen Harper was going to show in the new livery A310 Canforce 1. Had it come to fruition it would have been pretty underwhelming, then again so is a 737.

That's not nearly as exciting as the Cargolux 747 that came through last night.

Westjet Disney plane just made its first landing on the runway too BTW

The best view is to be had by golfers... McCall Lake at the threshold of 35L and Silverwing for 35R. Incentive to pick up the game of golf, perhaps.

Stupid Question Time:

Last night I was over my relatives sitting in the back yard enjoying a fire and looking up at the beautiful starry night sky. I noticed a few planes over head destined for Europe and I got to thinking:

Why do we only see contrails during the day?

I know it has to do with temperature, and water vapour but at 35,000 feet would the temperature change that much from day to night? You'd think you would see contrails at night from time to time.

Or is it just that I've somehow never noticed?

I'm pretty sure I've seen contrails at night when a full moon lights up the sky.

Yikes. Unmentioned in the article, but the 737 has had some serious control surface issues in the past.

Quote:
The Transportation Safety Board is trying to find out what caused a Canadian North jet to roll, shortly after take off last December. The Boeing 737-300 had just left Fort MacKay, Alberta, with 133 passengers and 6 crew members on board. The TSB says as the airplane had climbed to about 800 feet when it began a 10 degree roll to the left. The pilots tried to counter to the right, but couldn't. Then there was a drop in air speed.

"The whole manoeuvre last 15 to 20 seconds,” says John Tavernini, a senior technical investigator with the TSB. “It wasn't very long, but it was a period of time when the pilots felt they were losing control of the aircraft. But control was regained before any upset occurred.”
