Diablo came out around the time the internet was just starting to become mainstream. Multiplayer gaming over the internet was in it's infancy and Diablo was the first graphical game that appealed to the RPG type audience that was supported over the internet - everything prior had been either text or pretty much turn based. That means you had a whole genre of gamers who were born into online gaming through Diablo.

There were a couple games like this, but Blizzard really embraced online gaming in a big way with battle.net.

They are still tinkering, and in some areas radically changing things. Not only that, they are still releasing beta keys. Even if this was the last batch of keys, think 30 days or so of final feedback, followed by 30-45 days of lockdown/pre-production and a further 30 days of marketing/production.
I think they will be lucky to get this out before the end of Q2.
I just pre-ordered it too. Can't effing wait until May. Between my motorcycle and Diablo 3, I will be getting about 2 hours of sleep a night in the summer.
I caved as well. I've always loved gaming but the original Diablo pushed me over the edge. It also contributed to writing off my first year of university. That and alcohol.
I'm playing some D2 right now... well no, not playing. In all of my time in D2 I never had a 99. I had 96's, 97's, and even a 98, but never a level 99. So I set up a single player Hammerdin bot to grind away Chaos Sanc in /players 8. Just hit 97 yesterday morning, and I'm pretty sure it'll hit 99 before May 15th.
Where do you see this? Or do you just mean they've been giving out beta keys to those "selected" after opting-in on the battle.net site - if that's the case, they have been since Feb 2.

Is it just me or do most of these look absolutely horrible, some bordering on laughable? Not a fan at all. Tier 2 demon hunter and wizard don't look too bad tho...

Should you choose to view this in full screen mode, perhaps you might appreciate it a bit more... then again, perhaps not. That is your choice and I respect it.
I think the variety of artistry is quite cool. The Witch Doctor has some crazy wild shots (and again realize, these are but snapshots of all the possible layouts.)
This game isn't all about the graphics even though they have spent a ton of time on them. <OldFoggie> My first video game had a dot, a line and two small slashes. </OldFoggie>
It is all about addictive gameplay. But I do like the variety of artwork, even if it is a bit over the top!
