Also the 6th floor was where the awesome cafeteria was located.

No Thundercracker? Therer is only a small toy department left on 4 which will be closed. I was never old enough to remember the 6th floor. I do think I remember the stairs and basement cafeteria however, it had that white porcelain charm to it.
A year or two ago I went into a washroom on the 5th floor and it was a timewarp to the 1940s. The stairwells look that way as well.

Can confirm. My aunt worked at the Bay in the early 80's and one Saturday a month we would meet her at the cafeteria for lunch and toy shopping. Good memories.

Does anyone remember the manually operated elevators? As a kid, I always thought it was neat watching the guy sitting on the stool running that thing all day.

They were doing some renos to the escalators about a year ago, which required people to take the stairwells that were normally locked and not accessible by the public. They looked like they hadn't been renovated in decades.

I feel like I need to make a trip to the Bay before all this happens this summer. Don't know if I've ever actually been on more than two floors.

^^^ Those didn't last long, but I sure do remember the birdcage they'd have to close, and an elderly person working the elevator controls like you read in books.
Funny, I don't remember the cafeteria on the 6th floor as much as the faux Harrods food hall in the basement. Or the Chicago Franks on the +15 level for smokies and malts.
Those were good eating...

Haha — my dad used to take me to the Zellers cafeteria for lunch. I want to say $1.50 for a hot dog, drink and a chocolate pudding. I only remember ever eating the chocolate pudding...

They moved it from the 6th floor to the basement prob around 1990 I think.
The hotdogs right next to the Ralph Lauren Polo.. You could smell the dogs on the sweaters..

The dining hall on the 6th floor was called the Elizabethan Room, and was not to be confused with the deli in the bargain basement. They were entirely separate things. The Elizabethan Room was open until at least 2008 or so. Last time I was in there was about that time; I had lunch with my grandfather (who died in 2016).

My first high-school job was at Zellers.
Once was asked to clean poop from a ceiling. Was given a "scraper" and bag. I said no. Other kid was more willing. When it got in his hair he left and we never saw him again.
Coworker buddy would eat candy from the back because otherwise he was super poor and would starve.
I think someone was fired for doing a dunk on the basketball hoop in toys while people watched.
Manager looked like an angry triceratops. Did nothing but yell. All the time.
Fun times.

Any idea what's being built just north of the superstore in Shawnessy? There is a field there that is fenced off and they're now excavating but I didnt see any signs on what's going in there

Speaking of Superstore the site where Sunnyside Greenhouse used to be is being serviced with deep utilities, roadwork etc. There's a Superstore sign on the south end of the development, not sure what will done with the rest. Save On Foods just opened kitty corner in the Trinity Hills development so that area of town has suddenly gone from a single Safeway in Montgomery to three grocery options.

There's a sign facing MacLeod but I can't see the builders name. It looks like a seniors living place.
Speaking of Shawnessy, Winner's is opening a store in Township in Legacy. Is the Winners store in Shawnessy closing?

I think the sign facing Macleod is for a senior's residence in Evergreen next to fish creek park. There's some new signs near the Superstore that seem to imply rental apartments are going up.

Oh wow that sparked a childhood memory that I didn't understand until you mentioned Chicago Franks. Now it is coming back together along with a neon sign and hot dog smells I remembered from a restaurant by the +15 doors.
