I don't think that "lots of people really liked JW that much"...I think that a lot of people were hoping that JW would be to the Jurassic franchise as TFA is to the Star Wars franchise. The JW people have been/were disappointed...

My favourite part of Jurassic World was Ron Howard's daughter.
... jk Chris Pratt was pretty good and a legit movie star.

It's a tough one to call, but $2B should be realistic. It's already at $600 million worldwide.

Fair enough. Good insight. You're right, if JW made $1.7B then $2B for Star Wars is totally within the realm of possibility not including merchandising.
Because, as was indicated before, if people were disappointed with JW after the first view they arent going over and over again which is clearly not the case with Star Wars.

$2B box office receipts isn't the same as $2B in Disney's bank account. Still I think their take on merchandising will be huge, probably way bigger than the box office piece. With a movie a year I don't think it will take them long to recoup their money.

I'll likely go see it again, and I've seen about 3 movies in my life more than once in the theatre. I already have a ticket for the 28th purchased before I got earlier ones, but I might skip out on that and just go later and see it without 3D.
Speaking of which ... does anyone want a single ticket to the 11PM IMAX 3D show on Monday the 28th? It's pretty dead centre, and I'm just not going to use it.

Yeah, but no one cares about Gone with the Wind when they mention this.

Maybe not, but I'm okay with that. I like records that are held for a long time.

Star Wars 1977 in today's dollars made $1.45 billion domestically I think this is a good comparison.

No movie has even come close to 1 billion real dollars domestically. I don't think Starwars will either although it has a chance to take over #1. It would have needed to be at about 350-400 million by now to come close to 1 billion in North America. It's only 54 million ahead of JW which finished at 652 million. It should have much longer legs but it would essentially need to muster up another opening weekends worth of ticket sales over JW to even put some room between it and Avatar (760.5 million)
You can't compare the entertainment landscape in 2015 to that of the 70's or even more so to that of the 40's. It would take an absolute phenomenon to come close to those top 3 movies (sound of music is #3 with 1.2 billion). I honestly thought Starwars would have a shot but I think it's at the carrying capacity of the North American movie market. Only so many theaters and these days seeing a movie more than twice in theaters is rare. When Gone with the Wind was out? There was no home movies. There was nothing else competing for your money. In order for any movie to come close it would have to create some sort of gimmick that would be so mind blowingly awesome that almost everyone would want to go see the movie in theaters again and again.

Titanic made $1.1 billion domestically inflation adjusted this is the best comparison, movie released in the modern era that set all kinds of records. Particularly impressive given Titanic had a running time of 3 hours 15 minutes so less show times.

Serious question- why does the average moviegoer care about box office sales? It seems like an odd conversation.

The average movie goer doesn't. Some find it interesting, like myself and obviously others. Some hockey fans just want to see their teams win, others are curious about who has the most points too.

Does it provide a metric beyond just the success of the movie? Probability of sequels or continuance of the genre? Or is it it's useful as a "a did better than b, but b was a better movie" kind of thing.

The Force Awakens just destroyed the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day box office records.
On Christmas Eve, it pulled in $27.59 million. The previous record was Avatar's $11.15 million. On Christmas Day, it did $49.34 million, doubling the previous record of $24.61 million by Sherlock Holmes.
It is already the 10th highest-grossing film of all time, and should be close to the Top five by the end of the weekend. It will also likely be the highest-grossing Star Wars film by the end of the weekend, overtaking both the original and The Phantom Menace.

Well...only one of those was a Star Wars film, so...good.

In non adjusted box office.
I wish they did just straight people through the turnstiles instead of dollars.
