does this teams management really feel like 1 off-season is a good rebuild?

The team seems to have been in win-now mode the entire time, dating back to drafting Monohan (We need a player who can play in the NHL next season)... why?

Cant we suck for 2-5 years and then go into win-now mode?

Very frustrating that they would make a short-sighted move to bandage the Giordano injury when we could have promoted from within.

They are calling Brossoit our "best goaltending prospect". Poor Oil fans in denial.

The Flames have at least a dozen forwards that are as good or better than Horak.

Hanowski, Agostino, Arnold, Knight, Colborne, Baertschi, Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk, Jankowski, Gaudreau, and Granlund

So on that aspect, we didn't really lose all that much.

In addition, we have Berra who looks solid, Ortio that's performing well, and Gillies who's tearing up the NCAA. Add in getting Roy, who's not all that bad either and it's a very good trade.

Brossoit was behind Gilles, Ramo, Berra and Ortio. Horak fell behind Backlund, Monahan, Colborne, Bouma, Knight, Reinhart etc

We as Flames fans might be a fan of the players but they're easily expendable, and this trade makes the Flames better and the Oilers much worse

I like it

Just look north to see how that plan worked. There is nothing wrong with rebuilding and also trying to be a competitive hockey team. Smid is 27, not 34. The Flames gave up Horak and Broissot, two guys I like but it's not a 1st and Baertschi,

Go look at that Feater quote about Monahan again, please.

Really like this. Horak was a tough fit here and we have Gillies, Ortio, Berra as the goalies in our system.

Smid is solid

This move has nothing to do with win-now mode..lol

Trading a couple of other depth prospects for a top 4 d-man signed for three more years at a reasonable 3.5 million is a great move.

Crazy.

Good deal for the Flames though, Smid makes them better than they were yesterday.
Given our goaltending depth of Berra, Ramo, Ortio, Gillies, its not a shock he got traded. Its fitting he got traded to Edmonton considering he played his entire WHL career there, quite successfully I might add.

But yes I agree its good for the Flames..

Not sure why Flames fans be mad. Smid is the best d-man on the Oilers and a fine 4th on any team. I think they stole this deal and I like Horak a little.

I actually think the Oilers got quite a bit worse... they traded their best d-man and signed Bryzgalov... Bryzgalov has already shown he's not a top guy behind even better d-men.

Thread was filled with Calgary fans saying the Oilers did something right, maybe happens once every 25 years. You couldn't be more wrong about your assessment really.

First of all, condolences are in order to the Horak and Brossoit families. Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow, you are in our prayers.

As for the asylum run amok in the Edmonton front office, all you can do is laugh.

Not a giggle, mind you. Not a chuckle. Not even a deep-belly "Har, har, har"!

No, the sort of laughter I'm talking about is the falling off your chair screaming maniacally and pounding on the floor for several minutes till your sides hurt and you are dehydrated from the tears kind of laughter.

The sort of laughter that left the Joker's hair green.

How could any GM in his right mind, weaken his defence to make cap room for one of the greatest headcases to ever play between the pipes.

Never change, Kevin Lowe!

Ladislav Smid isn't a 'win now' move; an opportunity presented itself to acquire a young, top-4 defender who's under contract at a good number for another three years for two long shot prospects; a goalie and the 7th rated center in the organization.

Rebuild doesn't mean 'be as crappy as possible'. The team should always be looking to improve. This trade makes them better. The best player is coming to Calgary. We win.

Yeah, we should just suck for 2-5 years and then magically become awesome. Seems to be working out great for those guys up north who, seven years into their rebuild, just panicked and traded a 27 year old shutdown dman (arguably their best dman) to their archrivals for pennies on the dollar.

Solid.

Great trade! Just... awesome.

I liked Horak too - he's an NHL player who never got an appropriate shot here. But adding a bit of size on the backend is way more important.

Olivier Roy will be an easy guy to dump in Alaska to ensure more playing time for Ortio. His RFA status is nice as it opens up room for Gillies next year if he turns pro. I think taking Roy was a favour to the Oilers to get rid of a contract and open up a goalie roster spot for Broissoit. I'd be shocked if Roy lasts longer than the season with the Flames. His stats are nothing to write home about: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=106601

Also losing Smid and acquiring Horak makes the smurfy Oilers even smaller.
