Again that’s the part of your premise that makes no sense and lacks evidence
Why do you think they weren’t following their list?

Well they took a lower rated prospect with injury history like Honzek because he’s bigger.
Left a better rated prospect with injury history on the board and took a lesser prospect because of size.
They have even talked about drafting bigger players.
All I’m really saying is just stick to your list. Collect as many picks as you can and let these scouts pick. They have show they can find gems in the draft.
Let’s try to be Dallas and Carolina and become great at drafting.

You just picked 1 part of my post.
All I’m really saying is just let the scouts cook and go off the list. Don’t deviate from the list because you already had a run on 5’11 players so now it’s time for size.
If BPA is 6’6 take him, if he is 5’9 take him.
You can always trade good prospects and picks to address needs. How many people hoped for Stankoven for Tanev?
I bring up Hunter Smith because that was a massive mistake and I will never be convinced he was a 2nd round rated prospect. He was picked because he was big. Just don’t do that again.
|
I think you are criticizing the wrong thing.
Teams are going off their lists. It’s likely you don’t agree on their list.
It’s not like every team had Stankoven and Kutherov top 10 on their lists and chose to ignore them when their turn came. They had them much further down on their lists.

He looks fine to me, but I’ve only seen him on tv.
I don’t think 5’11 is small.

Because they said they took him because of his size.
The guy lacked everything else. Just because he’s big makes him a 2nd round rated prospect ?
They have talked about deviating from the lists the past. If they didn’t we wouldn’t have taken Gaudreau.

Again why do you think they are not sticking to their own list?
Honzek was rated 16 by Mckenzie, who actually assembled his list from scouts. He went in the range he was expected.
The team doesn't draft off the THN list. They have a list. They pick from it.
They picked Honzek because that's where they had him.

They have talked about Kucherov and Gaudreau.
They didn’t think Kucherov would go that early. They worried Gaudreau would be taken so they took him earlier than they had him ranked.
Why do you think they had them rated lower? Off the chart skill but size was the issue.

Size is part of ranking a prospect. You don't have one list with little guys and one list with big guys. Size is a factor in assembling where you rank guys.
Smith was considered the top over-ager that year because his production really shot up in the OHL. He was projected to be a late 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder. That's where he went.

I literally responded to your one liner that stated, as a point of fact, that they have the same head scout in Todd Button.
So my response was pretty fitting in my mind.

Because they have said so in the past they have moved off the list to make certain picks.
It’s the same as trading back and up in a draft. That’s not really sticking to a list.

I don't think that's true at all.
They have always stated they stick to their list.
Moving down is suggesting they think they can get any of three players they see equally plus get another pick.

You're a lot of work!
I am patiently answering your concerns. You gave me a one liner about the head scout being the same. I responded.
Do you want to be right? Or do you want to ingest suggestions that they may in fact be doing what you want them to do?

It's clear that Honzek was the top player available on the Flames list. We will never know why they had him that high but I imagine size was a factor but we could argue about that forever. I'm just looking at today and with the hindsight of a year after the pick the player doesn't look as good as some the the players teams got after the Flames and the day of that draft it also felt like there were some better players available when they took him so maybe not that surprising. It doesn't mean he's a bust or anything but it's just not an ideal situation for an organization that lacks elite talent in their system and needs to maximize their high picks. For the record I still think he has a good chance at being an NHL player, just not the player that I think they thought they were getting when the picked him.

They literally said they took him because they got worried another team(Boston) was going to take him.
Is that sticking to the list?
It works both ways. It can be good or bad. In this case they let the scout make the call and it worked out.
These guys work all year for this. They have shown they are able to find top end players.
I’m not biased towards size anyway. Just let the make the pick big or small and let’s get NHL players.

A career 2 point player who was now a 40 point player ? That’s not really shooting up.
He wasn’t a good player and they took him because he was big. They wasted a draft pick.

So you're talking about Kucherov, in the fourth round, from 13 years ago as proof there is concern for picks in 8 weeks?

It wasn’t a 1 liner Mr. Bingo
I added more meat to my post and even said the same scout has picked stars.
All I’m really saying is just let the scouts run the draft. They are good enough that I think they will get us good players.

If you had an in-depth view of things that was more than "they still have Todd Button" then why did you reply that way?
You went the simple, dismissing answer. I responded.
