For the purposes of discussion that expense has been paid for. In comparing the value/cost of getting a new car you take the current value of the used car not the original value of the used car.
So the Saddledome is worth 0 dollars (and in fact is likely a liability) once a new arena is open. So 600 million is the correct comparison. Actually the number should be more than 600 million once you account for debt servicing costs.

I suppose you could look at it that way, as long as there is acknowledgement that the Flames' new rink would similarly not net a half a billion dollar improvement over than the dome. The original implication I got from that post was that Rogers cost far more than it should have, which I'm not sure I agree with given the entire scope of this project and what it will do to transform a crappy part of their downtown.

It was quiet because the Oilers suck (still). But I do have to say it's a nice looking blot on an otherwise ugly downtown. I have an office that looks right down the street to it.

From one Edmontonian to another, you better find something to like pretty quick on a daily basis, otherwise you're going to be tragically depressed in this city haha.

As soon as someone begins their post in these words I am prone to believe that they do not in fact hate the Oilers as much as they claim, and certainly hate them much less so than most others in this thread.
Having said that, I don't care about the uncontested awesomeness of the new number-one-reason-to-visit-Edmonton. The fact that the city's new best amenity is a hockey rink is ample reason for enormous servings of ridicule. The fact that the Oilers, their fans and the Edmonton media feel the need to boast incessantly about their recent construction project is hilarious and pitiful.
So what if Roger's Place is good? It doesn't nothing more for that armpit of a city than to exacerbate the truth that Edmonton is no good.

A new Flames arena would effectively serve the sole purpose of replacing the old one, which is unlike the new Oilers arena that Oilers fans and Edmontonians all desperately hope to make the city of Edmonton worthy of any level of outside attention.

Ill be stuck in Edmonton for work long-term, but I'm allowed to recognize that the arena is a major step in the direction of a revitalization of downtown. Excuse the hell out of me for not wanting the city I live in to continue being a dump. If that equates to being an Oilers fan, then this isn't even worth talking about anymore.

The city of Edmonton is not so much a dump as it is an ashtray.

Haven't been to the new arena myself but my coworker who is a hardcore Oiler fan had a funny review. She said the inside is gorgeous. Imported marble, gorgeous slate, state of the art jumbotron, etc. In her words she says it doesn't even feel like Edmonton when you're in there, feels like it should be somewhere like NYC. Then you step outside, see a hobo pissing in the street and immediately your like "oh right ... definitely in Edmonton."

It's a pinnacle of modern architecture, really. But... Edmonton. So it sucks.

Maybe Vancouver is where you dump all the ashtrays once they're full?
