If Uber does nothing but continue to aggravate the taxi lobby and increase competition in the marketplace, welcome back!

I haven't used any of the apps, so can't say. But the city recommends verifying the rate before you start the trip.

Haha, the city is asking that Uber pay it back for the fees it incurred in its "pricey undercover enforcement operation" of their drivers back in 2015.

Kudos to the Uber rep for not laughing out loud at the request. I suppose he will wait until operations have resumed before faxing them over a picture of his middle finger.

And the taxi companies want to be paid for each Uber trip that took place when Uber was operating. What a joke.

I think the cities request is fairly reasonable. They incurred costs as a result of a company breaking bylaws. Ignoring for a moment that the bylaw was broken to begin with.
The cab request is ridiculous because private companies are never reimbursed for lost income do to illegal activity.

When you get a parking ticket, do you pay the meter maid's salary and benefits?

If their was a company promoting and making money of off selling illegal parking requiring additional resources then the typical enforcement personal then yes I should be paying the additional costs

I would put Uber disobeying a terrible bylaw more on the level of non violent civil disobedience, and think there's no way they should pay for that investigation.
Non violent check
Nobody was hurt check
Fundamentally flawed law changed after public outrage check
World a safer place after check
(If folks can get transportation reliably Sat night, that will almost certainly make the roads safer for us all)
I'm not saying they should be getting a peace prize, since they're basically arrogant jerks, but no way should they have to pay for a sting operation to protect a flawed law.

If they hadn't have broken the bylaw I doubt the City would have changed the bylaws.
I have nowhere to go tonight but am so happy Uber is back. Maybe I'll go for a joy Uber ride.

It was almost criminal how long this took to approve in Calgary.
I often wonder how many people would have chosen Uber to get home instead of driving drunk because of the significant price decrease compared to cabs?

None,
The cost of a cab is not the reason people drive drunk. The cost of Uber is not meaningfully less than a cab relative to the cost of getting drunk.
Availability I suspect there were a few
But more than that I suspect people justified poor decisions by saying cabs were too expensive or not available and in the absense of those justifications would have found others.

I think the real test of Uber will come on the weekend with all the Christmas parties and a flames game on Saturday night. Will they have enough drivers on the road or will the surge prices be ridiculous? Hope that they have plenty of drivers and can fulfill the need for those nights.

Maybe not too many because of cost but certainly lots because of availability.
