If a small forward who turns 30 this year has never had more than 36 points, I do not consider them to be a "great player"
Especially not on a deal through their 30s at this cap hit.

Another meh signing. Sure he might work out and be a 50 point player for 5M. I like that he is a RW. Lets hope he finds some chemistry and turns into a 60+ point guy.

Color me surprised, I didn't think he would pick CGY. I don't think that would be much more than what other teams were offering either, to be honest.
Anyways, hopefully it makes the team better overall. I just want to see the Flames play winning hockey.

If we are truly aiming to make a run with this group still and Sutter in charge, we will need another big name brought in here.
Coleman helps but he doesn't put as back into that perennial playoff team category alone.
Need some more work.
Ideally a swap that helps the top 6 (duh).
Also a defensive D option.

Hyman and Coleman to Edmonton and Calgary.
If anything, Hyman who has a little more offense, should be going to Calgary.
Coleman, who is better defensively, should be going to Edmonton.
Maybe in a couple of years, they can be traded for each other.

Let's look at past anchor contracts and when they fell off:
Raymond - 29 (signed at 29)
Brouwer - 30 (signed at 31)
Neal - 31 (signed at 31)
Lucic - 29 (signed at 28)
Stajan - 32 (signed at 30)
Frolik - 31 (digned at 27)
Let's say Coleman bucks the trend and is effective to 32. That's another 3 years of term you need to buyout.
Signing a UFA who turns 30 this year isn't just risky, it's bound to backfire unless you can halve the term to 3 years.
|
I hear you but i think you can get some comfort that Coleman has played 350 NHL games including playoffs which isn't a lot compared to other 2011 draft picks (nuge, landeskog, etc) that are over 600 games before including playoffs. I remember this was some of the thinking when Gio was signed to that long contract.

Killorn - Signed when he was 25
Oshie - Comparatively aged to Coleman when he signed his deal, though I think Oshie's pedigree placed him higher in the lineup
Tuch - he's only 25 right now

A player who scored 5v5 goals at the 5th best rate on Tampa, recorded 5v5 assists at the 3rd best rate on Tampa, and produced 5v5 points at the 4th best rate on Tampa while being absolutely dominant defensively?
Yea, I think he's an okay player.

To be fair, this does seem like a replay of the Brouwer and Neal contracts. So there's lots to be wary about here.
I'm looking for positives, but I totally understand why some posters are worried. Mostly, I look at his stats in NJ and see that Coleman managed back to back 20 goal seasons there. So he's not just a product of a winning team. Also, our bottom 9 looked anemic on many nights. Coleman looks consistent and full of energy.
Coleman is also a warrior. Despite not being the biggest guy, he's fought legit heavyweights like Wilson and Gudas.
Really glad that we didn't pay the rumoured $6 million, but also have a lot of reservations.
We'll see what happens with the major moves that need to be done. Gaudreau extension, Monahan trade, Eichel (I can still dream), etc...
And yes, these are the kinds of moves Stanley Cup winning teams make. St. Louis signed Bozak for $5 million before they won a cup. Well....they also sign Patrick Maroon, but he's not available.

Over 3 years there in NJ, he scored 25, 36 and 31 pts(last in 57 games). He scored at about that same rate in Tampa Bay last year.
Those are solid numbers, though not sure I’d call them outstanding. I think he’s a hardworking honest player and all that.
But I don’t see the incredible and outstanding upside others are seeing.

If nothing else changes what does the Flames forward lineup look like.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Monahan- Coleman
Dube - Backlund - Pitlick
Lucic - Pelletier - Emilio Pettersen
Ritchie
Gawdin

Coleman is 205 lbs and habitually gets into fights with bigger players. He's not small and in no way plays small:

It's horrible logic. Aging has more to do with the results of the metabolic process than it does with how many of your hockey games were in the NHL. Marleau was one of the most graceful agers in league history and simultanrously played some of the highest game counts in history. Minor league games, weight lifting in the offseason, etc etc also still contribute to wear and tear.

GOAT!

I like this. I know Coleman played the wings in TB, but he's really a C. If we can shed Backlund's contract, then we're looking at:
Out: 32 year-old 3C with three more years @ $5,350,000 per
In: 29 year-old 3C with 6 more years @ $4,900,000 per
We get a 20 goal 3C who's still in his prime and save $450,00 off his fall-off years.
