Regardless of what you think of his performances this season, after missing so much time last year and this year, what Honzek really needs is an injury-free season. Look at what playing every game in 2022-23 did for Connor Zary's development.

Brayden Point syndrome, some never learn.

Perrault was also well ahead on other lists, some scouts had him around 10, I don't know of even one scout with a published list had Honzek ahead of Perreault

Was hoping Honzek would pan out as a top line player and end up as a steal.
Will be happy with a middle six guy now.

What about prediction mistakes by fans?

Lol at people thinking they know how a prospect still playing in junior will pan out in the NHL. You think history would teach something.

Admittedly, I didn't check his stats before posting, but he was going at a 70P pace for a good chunk of the season.
Right now he has 51P in 69GP, so I'm sure he'll get a couple more before the season is over. Even if you consider him having a 55 points my point stands, because he is a force out there all season, and the best forward on the Flames.

I don’t think he was ever at a 70 point pace, although here peaked close to that at one time before falling off quickly.
He was at a 60 point pace for awhile.

It's OK to question Honeks long term potential at this point. A junior player taken in the 1st round should not have his production back slide in his D +1 season.
That's not a good sign no matter what.
Hopefully he can overcome it and succeed.

Ryan O'Reilly was under 20 goals as a junior and never made PPG. Became a pretty effective NHLer.

Yes, and he has never been a real big scorer in the NHL
But he is a center that brought everything else at elite level

Don't judge a player by his junior point production. Judge him by the sum of his parts.

Personally I don’t care about 23rd overall picks until they do something noteworthy in the show.

O'Reilly is a pretty big outlier, though. He was drafted in the 2nd round and made the NHL immediately after being drafted. Definitely not the norm.

Draft Pick
|
My main concern with picking him was that he was definitely a risk reward player. That's not necessarily a bad decision, but in a draft class as deep as '23, it felt like even more of a risk. We could have drafted someone who would be a pretty solid bet to be a great second line player, and yes Honzek could still be a good second line center, and he was drafted because he had potential to be a top line forward. It just always struck me as a weird gamble that year in particular.
Injuries have certainly hampered his progress, and it's still early to tell. But the way things have gone so far is cause for concern. Maybe he has a great off season, recuperates properly and has a phenomenal bounce back year. But I think it's also fair to temper expectations at this point.

51 points in 69GP is a 61 point pace.
On Jan 16th Coleman had 38 points in 44GP, which was a 71 point pace for a bit over half the season. I wasn't just throwing 70 out there to see if it sticks, I just didn't notice that Coleman only had 13 points in the last 25 games.
I still think that Honzek can turn things around with the right coaching, especially if injuries are affecting his play.

I believe you claimed he was on a 70 point pace for a good chunk of the season.
One game does not constitute a good chunk of the season.
