Default Silverback Gorilla vs. A Polar Bear: Who would win?

All other things equal.

VS.

Things to consider:
- Bears have sharp claws and teeth
- Gorillas are strong as fata

I would bet the Gorilla would be more agile and able to whip around on the bear since he can move bipedal. I think, though, one swat by the bear would fell the big ape.

Win = Polar Bear.

Gorilla, those things are beasts. What they lack in claws they make up in massive strength.

Polar Bear beats pretty much anything land based on the planet.

Here's my take:

As they square off, I don't see any way that either animal would give in. It would be a hell of a long stare down. The first move would be made by the gorilla. He's the smarter of the two and would try to use that to his advantage once he figures it out. The polar bear is probably a quicker striker than the gorilla, so he would be more looking for a 'wham and bam' sort of fight, where as the gorilla would try to focus on taking as little hits and bits as possible and outcast the bear using his strength. I think going just off of body power, this fight is the gorilla's to lose.

There was a virtual fight with this type of scenario. I believe one of the biggest surprises was the jaw strength of the gorilla. It was extremely over powering. Thing can bite you antimantium claws right off!

And we have all seen King Kong.... He took on THREE T-Rex's! He's a beast!

Animal face off... And nope it was a Bear vs Tiger

I'd put the odds at Silverback -300. I think it wins in a walk.

A very large silverback gorilla weighs 500 lbs, a large polar bear weighs 1500 lbs. There would be no contest. (both wikipedia stats) To top it off, the gorilla is a pansy when it comes to the cold.

What about in a best of 7, where the gorilla has home field advantage?

All things are equal, so you couldn't fight in the Arctic. Maybe someplace like Canada in the fall.

Also (to those voting monkey):

vs

What's he gonna do? Shake the bear's hand??

Certainly the polar bear has some firepower in those mitts, but those gorilla's are sneaky simians. Using the cerebral advantage and opposable thumbs, they might pick up that big log/rock and start swinging. Also, they chuck feces.

Bear would win easy - for one thing, gorillas generally are herbivores and don't fight much, for another, polar bears are much much bigger as has been pointed out.

Now, say you replaced your gorilla with a rhino - now you're talking a more even match up! On the plus side, a rhino weighs a ton or more, so the bear is at a bit of a disadvantage there, and the rhino does have a very thick hide. The bear still has claws, and is much more agile as well, so it'd be one mother of a fight.

I wonder if the Romans - who used to fight animals against each other in the colloseum as well as humans vs humans and humans vs animals - ever fought a brown/black bear against a rhino? (interlude while I google) Hmm, nothing definitive, but this guy thinks waaaaaaaayyyyyy too much about who would win a lion-tiger fight: http://indrajit.wordpress.com/category/lion-vs-tiger/

As well as these!

Polar bear jaws:

vs

Monkey mouth:

I mean, really. One guy looks like he's very impressed, the other guy is kissing his cheek. Would you be able to kiss a polar bear? Unlikely. And gorillas have NIPPLES. They look like George Clooney's Batman.

Even Nippleman looks meaner than that obese monkey.

Polar Bear would destroy a Silver back.

A good fight would be an African Croc VS a Polar Bear in shallow water.
