Krahn was ranked in that range, he was probably legit their BPA on their list

If only they made a "homer" pick on Getzlaf

I think it's better to trade for a prospective goalie than to waste a pick on a goalie. Get a goalie as needed for the farm or the big club cuz you don't build a team around goalies.

But yeah by picking Krahn they missed out on stars like....

Mikhiail Yakubov,
Pavel Vorobiev
Alexei Smirnov
Ron Hainsey
Vaclav Nedorost

There is no player taken 10-20 in that entire draft that you're like "oh the made a huge miss by not taking him and taking Krahn instead". Just a bad draft.
Smirnov would've been sweet! Flames organization could've cashed in on that name alone!

While true for a generational/franchise player (need to bottom out lower for those) picking the decade 2011-20 at random (to account for more recent draft tendencies but allowing players a chance to establish) we've got Hamilton, Trouba, Horvat, Ehlers, Meier, Sergachev, Rasmussen, Kravtsov, Zegras, Rossi

a pretty solid list so they should expect (and deliver) a top half of roster player

Same height as Kiprusoff - he was incredible against the US in the U18 final, made at least five saves he had no business making.

Haven’t been that impressed by a Canadian goalie performance in decades, probably going back to Fleury/Price.

Excluding 2023 and 2022 which are too soon to tell it looks to me like 13/17 players drafted at 9 OA went on to become impact NHLers. There are a handful of really good players on that list.

2021 (AZ) F Dylan Guenther 78 gp 50 pts
2020 (MIN) F Marco Rossi 103 gp 41pts
2019 (ANH) F Trevor Zegras 211 gp 154 pts
2018 (NYR) F Vitali Kravtsov 64 gp 12 pts
2017 (DET) F Michael Rasmussen 313 gp 119 pts
2016 (MTL) D Mikhail Sergachev 475 gp 257 pts 2 Stanley Cups
2015 (SJS) F Timo Meier 541 gp 382 pts
2014 (WPG) F Nikolaj Ehlers 605 gp 457 pts
2013 (VAN) F Bo Horvat 732 gp 504 pts
2012 (WPG) D Jacob Toruba 748 gp 309 pts
2011 (BOS) D Dougie Hamilton 771 gp 461 pts
2010 (MIN) F Mikael Granlund 819 gp 544 pts
2009 (OTT) D Jared Cowen 249 gp 46 pts
2008 (NYI) F Josh Bailey 1057 gp 580 pts
2007 (SJS) F Logan Couture 933 gp 701 pts
2006 (MIN) F James Sheppard 394 gp 91 pts
2005 (OTT) D Brian Lee 209 gp 36 pts

They would have moved the needle the exact same amount. The truth is that the 2000 draft was just a bad draft year all around.

If the draft history has anything to say, its that the Flames have a good shot at a core piece at 9. Maybe not a top player league wide, but certainly someone who moves the needle.

I think we could swap with someone in the 6-8 range, though not for the premium some have suggested.

Columbus, Montreal, Ottawa and Utah all could make cases to take Iginla, but they probably don’t have him above all centres and D that will also be available.

An extra 2nd, maybe a prospect like Poirier.

I don’t think we’re talking Vancouver’s pick + Coronato or something stupid like that.

2000 was probably one of the worst draft classes of all time, in retrospect. Not quite as bad as 1999, not right up there with '96 either, but... bad. Most teams had at best a couple guys make the NHL full-time. The Flames managed to pick three: Jarrett Stoll, Travis Moen and Kurtis Foster. That was actually pretty good.

By comparison the Blackhawks had fifteen picks, of whom seven played any games in the NHL, and the best of them were far and away #11 overall Pavel Vorobiev, #10 overall Mikhail Yakubov, and #74 overall Igor Radulov (Alex's brother); those three combined played 153 games and scored 53 points. The Canucks' seven picks had 39 games played (Nathan Smith (1st rnd, 26 GP, 0 P) and Brandon Reid (7th rnd, 13 GP, 6 P)). The Sharks' seven picks had a combined 22 games (Michal Macho (9), Michal Pinc (7) and Tero Maatta (6)). The Panthers' eight picks ended up playing a combined 19 games in the NHL (Janis Sprukts (8th rnd, 14 GP) and Josh Olson (6th rnd, 5 GP)).

Good point.

Had a look ... Calgary was the fourth highest team in games played, and the 2nd highest team in games played / total picks.

I thank you for the kind words and compliments. I'm still pissed that Sutter traded me to the Leafs

This is a big reason why the young guns era was such a slog. From 96 to 2002 the drafts in general were weak. There just wasn't that many good players to be had in those years. Than add in that 9 expansion teams were shuffled into the deck in a 9 year span which pushed the team higher in ranking than they should have been.
