If there is one thing Edward's knows how to do well its playing hardball in negotiations. Flames don't HAVE to move Markstrom yet so the price should be high.
Hope it gets done tho!

Why people state this stuff like fact, I don’t know. I don’t see any reason why offers couldn’t be the same or better in the summer.

He's got no D in front of him anymore. Good chance his numbers dwindle. Teams are loading up for runs right now, its been an active deadline. Teams don't need to do desperate things in the middle of summer, they don't have the pressure cooker of the deadline on them. The don't have the recency bias of watching Markstrom play at a high level right now. Other goalies may become available by that point. There are plenty of reasons the offers might not be as good then. Probably more reasons the offers would be worse.

And plenty of reasons why the offers could be the same or better. Which is my point. They might get worse, sure, but if the option is selling him at a discount right now or keeping him and someone wants to argue that he’ll never get better than discounted offers, then there’s just no substance to back it up.

No, they are trading Toffoli because they are not locked into a playoff spot for sure and TT wants term and money which NJ does not want to give him. Very similiar to what happened here. So they will move him to recoup something rather than let him walk for nothing. If NJ is comfortably in a playoff spot they would use him as a rental, they are not though.

Hmmm makes sense, also tracks as to why they would still pursue Markstrom even in the summer. Thanks.

I'm not sure this is entirely directed towards NJ.
Isn't this really saying to the rest of the league that a similar deal and Markstrom is yours (pending Marky's approval)?

|
A few reasons:
- More goaltenders available in the summer, so takes away the buying team(s) focus on Markstrom as the primary target.
- Less urgency to make a move for a goaltender in the summer with a full season to play before playoffs.
- History of analytics deprioritizing goaltending and the assets to obtain it.

I think NJ is lowballing now because they are so iffy to make the POs and don’t want to be seen as betting the farm on a loser season.

If they aren’t giving us Mercer when they are desperate what makes you think that changes in the offseason.
Especially when they have more options available.

I am about 80% sure this deal will get done. Way too much smoke and I would bet the Flames would like to start an off-season without a bunch of drama. Its been a few seasons of constant BS to begin off-seasons.

Again, these are reasons why they might be worse, not reasons why they couldn’t be better. They might come true, or:
- Teams will have more cap space and time to make moves to fit the contract in
- Teams that want one of the available goaltenders will miss out, or see Markstrom as a better/cheaper option for the cap space
- Teams will value having a top goaltender for an entire season
- With a playoff run over, teams that were just outside or an early exit may feel the need to improve the position

If they aren’t giving us Mercer now and aren’t giving us Mercer later, then what’s the point of trading Markstrom now?
“We can’t wait on Markstrom just because the offers are low, if we wait until the summer the offers might be low!”
It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Who are these other options? And are they a better bet than Markstrom?
There will be other teams interested in Markstrom as well - some maybe reeling from POs where goaltending was a factor against them.

If the offer was Holtz and a 1st we should do it.

He has a ntc. You can’t just shop him around.
Ullmark and Saros are available both are younger.

Like what? Why would teams offer more or the same in the summer when the pressure is off and there's an entirely new field of available options, and the benefit of taking their time with no pressure of a deadline?

Eric Francis doesn't think Markstrom will be traded. That tells me he's as good as gone.
