That’s too bad. I really enjoyed cruising around Paris on a scooter.

Bump!

Bird files for bankruptcy in the US, says current Canadian operations will remain intact "for the time being".

I always thought those scooter companies would be a maintenance and logistics nightmare.

Like what would an average run-time be for a new unit before it was a total loss or needed significant maintenance/repairs to keep running. I bet it was only weeks...

Plus, you needed to spend money moving them around, charging them, landfilling them, etc.

Seemed unsustainable for the relatively low revenue obtained from rental income.
Probably what did them in.

It's not the scooters that are the problem, it's the people. Specifically morons who leave them as they step off them no matter where they are. Middle of the path? Run out of charge going up 10th st on the sidewalk? Blocking crosswalks? Bike lane? Who cares! Dump it where ever, other people don't matter.

The scooter companies should just get in on the by-law enforcement game and do a revenue share on fines. They'd be financially stable for an eternity.

Yeah, I'd prefer designated drop-off zones and enforcement/fines for people leaving them everywhere.

As for the scooters, though? I like ripping around on stuff.

So sick of lame-ass losers ruining the fun here, there and everywhere.

Yup - this seems really obvious. But they potentially calculate that if people were worried that they couldn't leave the scooters wherever, they wouldn't use them in the first place, maybe?

Like a boss. I prefer that to private scooters going 50km/h on our pathways.

That just seems unrealistic given the use case of the scooters.

Ideally the scooters snap a pic when they’ve been deactivated to show the drop off location. Then any costs attributed to damage from vandalism that occur because they were left obstructing a sidewalk, road, parking stall, doorway, etc are passed on to the db user who left it there.

Yeah, it is unrealistic. It would be better, that's all.

I'm willing to put up with the clutter to have fun sht, though.

Yeah totally. There's good scooting and bad scooting.

For those of you who only deal with scooters downtown in daytime business areas, they're probably a godsend and it's hard to see what all the fuss against them is about. It's usually used in wide open areas or bike lanes by (mostly) sober business professionals.

However, for those of you living or frequenting "fun" areas like Kensington or 17th Ave, those things are a menace. Usually drunk people ripping WAY too fast down narrow, heavily populated sidewalks. It's really bad. I'm actually shocked there's not more incidents with those things, it's definitely a problem.

That's weird it bothers you. I was at the Flames game on Saturday and went to Cowboy's Casino after. There were people on scooters and doubling each other and having a blast. I love that stuff.

It's probably fortunate that they weren't a bigger thing as the injury rates are incredibly high:

Quote:
A total of 1272 ED/urgent care patient visits were identified over the summers of 2019 and 2020, a large sample size compared to many other published e-scooter injury studies [1]. E-scooter injuries represented 15% of transportation-related injuries in Calgary emergency departments, with an incident rate per ride of 1 injury requiring an emergency department visit for every 1400 e-scooter trips.

Tell me it's still just people having harmless "fun" when one of those stupid ####s runs into you...

#### those scooters, I hope Calgary similarly outlaws them. Too many of the users are careless turds.

Yes, a blast for drunk people. Not a blast for people who live in the area if they're blasting by you on a narrow sidewalk trashed, I see so many close calls. Depends where they're doing it.

The solution is to also be on a scooter, that way you can scoot away from an incoming collision.

Nah. The solution is obviously to be in a bigger vehicle. I see e-scooter and raise e-bike.

That's why a lot of people buy SUV's right? So even if "someone else" is at fault, there's more vehicle to protect them than a typical sedan/subcompact?
