Lol that’s a bad trade for NJD… can’t believe they included the 3rd hahahaha Smith is 3 years younger and has a much higher ceiling IMO.

Jersey seems set with Hamilton and severson as 1 and 2 on the right side, and weaker on the left side where Smith played. And then pick up a right side Marino. Unless this is the first domino, someone will have to explain this to me.

From Pittys perspective I wonder if they are clearing space for Kadri

Smith’s development has been uneven for a while. I guess NJ figures he’ll be losing value and wanted to get something for him. Marino is pretty solid.

$4.4 mil until the end of 2027… with an 8 team no trade starting soon. RHS. This is a great move for NJ.

For sure, and this also probably means NJ thinks Nemec is already as good as Smith

I suspect they figured Smith’s RFA deal was going to be a tough one, and probably more than Marino’s. Smith may have a high ceiling but at present it’s just a projection. Marino’s pretty decent and tied up for his prime years. Oilers could sure use a D like him.

Thought one of the Oilers or Canucks might try to get Marino since both could use him and would make them better. Glad it didn't happen.

Yep. Smith was flat out bad last year after a pretty good rookie season. His strength is in the offensive zone and there was a real chance he would be the 4th best option on the PP by the start of the 23-24 season. Pretty easy to see Dougie, Nemec and Luke Hughes ahead of him on the depth chart
