Theres two problems with this.

First of all, if you have to start explaining the story you told after the fact then you told a crappy story.

And secondly, they cant just leave it as a 'fun 2 hour movie.' They wanted to make a Marvelian Dynasty out this thing.

You're basically right, they should just chalk it up to what it is, a few decent movies that made a bunch of money and move along to some other project. But thats likely not what their initial marching orders were, and in that context it hasnt lived up to that goal and it appears that they're trying to smooth that message after the fact.
