Default When an ad goes unintentionally wrong

The 10 year anniversary of the infamous Folgers Incest ad, a really interesting interview to read

https://www.gq.com/story/folgers-incest-ad-oral-history

Quote:
In 2009, Folgers released a commercial meant to be a modern reimagining of their classic ad "Peter Comes Home For Christmas." Little did they know, it would become a classic of its own—for a very different reason.
“Coming Home” opens with a taxi dropping a young man off outside a snow-covered house bedecked in Christmas decorations early one morning. A young woman excitedly opens the door and establishes that she’s his sister by pointing at herself and saying “sister!” He’s weary, having just returned from volunteering in “West Africa,” and the two share a cup of freshly-brewed Folgers coffee while their parents are still asleep. (In some versions he even says "ah, real coffee," as if he didn't just come from where some of the best coffee in the world is produced.) He hands her a small present, but instead of opening it, she peels off the red bow and sticks it on his shirt. “What are you doing?” he asks. “You’re my present this year,” she responds. The camera zooms in on her shy glance, then cuts to his furtive, flirty smile. Those three seconds sealed its fate forever.

I'm thinking it wasn't really a coffee commercial to begin with at all and was actually just the straight up intro to a porn that got co-opted and edit into something else on the cheap. In this case, a coffee commercial.

Does anyone else remember the late 80's kids cartoons that were just re-voiced and edited stuff from Japan? I remember a movie where all the people were animals, and a band of jackals rode around on motor cycles destroying jazz clubs drugging and kidnapping people then torturing them through waterboarding.

Folgers knew what they were doing. You'd have to be some kind of inbred to drink that crap.

Not quite the same but do many people remember when People Magazine named Elvis Grbac the Sexiest Athlete Alive?

https://theathletic.com/1554275/2020...athlete-alive/

Quote:
The section contained just two sentences. “Grbac was featured as People’s Sexiest Athlete in 1998. Sportswriter Jeff Pearlman claims this was because of a mistake by a photographer, told to photograph ‘the Chiefs quarterback,’ who accidentally photographed Grbac instead of the intended Rich Gannon.”
It's a good read if you have the Athletic.

I read the article first then watched the video and was kind of disappointed actually. Seems pretty innocent to me.

There's some ads that just get twisted into something else because main stream people can generally be awful. This is one of them.

The pepsi one backfired badly, just because of people being people and decided to associate it to Pepsi mocking a Black Lives Matter protest...

Probably the worst example of them all. Hallmark makes an innocent same sex marriage ad, angers the conservative public. Hallmark in an effort to appease pulls the ad, angering the liberal public.

Hallmark had to apologize, eventually CEO steps down, just because of an ad that angered the social outrage culture on both sides simultaneously. People are insane.

I don't see how that coffee ad in any way shape or form could possibly be interpreted as incest. WTF. I mean I supposed if I were drunk and desperate to fap to something and I came across that commercial in the heat of the moment, then...sure...?

Probably a bunch of horny dudes got turned on by the female actress and away they went with that meme. This is the first time I've ever heard of this ''controversy'', so...happy anniversary?

Best part of the whole ordeal is that TIL Timothy Simons (Jonah Ryan from Veep) was the cameraman for the commercial. That guy is awesome and the world needs more of him.

I'm equally upset that they would suggest Africa has bad coffee.

HAHAHA I've never seen that ad before, those two are doinking for sure. Folgers just trolling everybody with that one. I hope they buy some Super Bowl time for that ad and give everyone PTSD flashbacks.

I personally can't believe that Peloton didn't jump on reversing their ad around to show a lazy man on the couch eating Cheetoh's being chased onto the spin bike by his fit wife.

That ad was ripe to be remade to reshape the context of the badness.

He says that "it's a long way from West Africa", then says "Ah...Real coffee" in an exasperated voice.....like West Africa doesn't have some of the best and in highest demand coffee in the world, and likely far superior to what you'd find in a $10 tin of Folgers.

It's a pretty bizarre mistake from a company in the actual coffee industry.
