Just got back from 10 day trip to Spain and Portugal, and Darryl Sutter was on my flight from Frankfurt to Calgary. So he's back from Sweden now.

Glencross:*13 G, 27 A, 40 PTS, +14 PLAYOFFS
Brodziak:**11 G, 16 A, 27 PTS,**+4 TRADED
Spoke to him briefly and got a picture with him. Didn't know how the Flames had done while I was away so I didn't pester him too much. He looked really grumpy in the picture... but then again he almost always looks grumpy.

Said in the paper the other day he wanted a first-hand look at draft-eligible Europeans at the tournament.
I wonder if he is doubting his Euro scouts? The Wikner pick wasn't very good. Or maybe now that it seems like Sutter is focusing more on drafting the best player available(offensive and defensive) maybe he just wants to get a better feel for all draft eligible players. Before it seemed like Sutter was mainly keying in on character type North American players like Prust, Chucko and Pelech.

Draft-eligible prospects in this tournament (based on Sept. '88 birthdate or younger, so there may be older players who are undrafted):
Canada: Karl Alzner, Sam Gagner
Czech's: Michal Repik, Jakub Voracek
Finland: none
Russia: Vyatcheslav Voynov ('90 b'date), Alexey Cherepanov
Sweden: none
USA: Patrick Kane, Bill Sweatt, James vanRiemsdyk
Not many players available from the hockey superpowers. Is there one in that list interests Sutter?
Players from non-power nations:
Belarus: Dzmitry Korabau, Heorhi Yaskevich, Andrei Kolasau, Pavel Razvadouski, Andrei Stas, Ihar Varashylau
Germany: Timo Pielmeier
Slovakia: Tomas Hiadlovsky, Juraj Mikus, Juraj Valach, David Skokan,
Swiss: Lukas Flueler, Roman Josi, Yannick Weber, Luca ****i, Etienne Froidevaux, Diego Schwarzenbach, Gregory Sciaroni

Well some GM's are hands off the draft and some are hands on. Sutter clearly will be a hands on guy for at least our 1st rounder if not moreso. Therefore he needs to see the major tournaments including the World Juniors and the Under-18's in the spring. You can't ignore europeans, look at how many of them are the top players in the NHL. I'm sure Sutter still prefers Canadian kids if there's nothing else between the players but you aren't going to turn down a better prospect just because he's european.

Bill Sweatt looks like a potential Calgary draft pick, he's extremely fast and pretty reliable defensively as well. Given the offensive ability he's shown in the tournament so far, his stock is likely rising a bit.
