Purely anecdotal but all my UBC classmates from Edmonton did not go back, and my Calgary classmates did return home.

Also, Flames fans don't go to Edmonton forums looking for validation. We all stay where is best.

Probably because people in Edmonton still long for the 80s again when that statement was probably objectively true.

this thread was a lot more fun when it was about the oilers.
since it's turned into just bashing the city (by saying stuff that's, frankly, just stupid and uninformed) it's gotten boring.
the one upside is I'm learning a ton about the intellectual and emotional maturity of other posters.

It is hilarious team first overall hasn't drafted any better than the Flames with Gaudreau at 104th overall vs RNH at 1st overall the most hilarious of all. Suck it Oilers.

Unfortunately the Bennett vs. Draisaitl debate has swung pretty violently in their favour. Hopefully that changes in the upcoming season, especially as Bennett will likely have a far more affordable contract and most likely will offer better value for years to come. I guess timing is everything... if Bennett has his breakout season after signing his second contract, it's better for the team.

If true, that's pretty good news because a high of 10 million and a low of 7 million likely means landing in the middle at 8.5 million which still would put the Oil in a pretty tough cap situation moving forward.

In terms of economy they may be number one and two in the world.
I struggle to think of anywhere else that combines such high earning power (Especially in non prestige fields ie. Doctor, Lawyer, Finance), with such cheap housing prices.
As far as things to do/see. Pretty bland.

Yeah, I heard that too.
I kind of snickered.
What are Dra's options right now as an RFA.
Sign a deal at lower dollars that takes him to ufa, which is probably best for Edmonton if they get him at $7.
He holds out and hopes that the Oilers falter.
He pulls in Gio and signs to play in Europe for a year.
Under no circumstances can the oilers afford him at 10 million dollars.
Right now the Leafs are looking at the Draisaitl with a fear of impending doom.
2018-2019 season
McDavid 12.5
RNH 6
Lucic 6
JP 3.425 (inc bonus)
Kassian 1.950
Draisaitl 10
Kharia .675
Total signed forwards 7 total cap 40.55
RFA
Strome
Slepyshev
Caggiula
Pakarinen
UFA
Letestu
Maroon
Jokinen
Defense
Sekera 5.5
Klefbom 4.167
Larson 4.167
Russell 5
Total defense 4 signed 18.834
Goalies
Talbot 4.167
Total goalies signed 4.167
RFA
Broissent
Total players signed 12 total cap hit 63.551
The current cap for 2017-208 is $75 million, lets say it goes to 77 million, that leaves 13.449
for 8 to 9 players
That also currently leaves them with a lineup line this
Lucic McDavid Draisaitl
Kharia RNH JP
______ ______ Kassian
______ ______ ______
Sekera Larson
Klefbom Russell
_______ ______
Talbot
______
Out of the RFA's the ones that might earn big raises are
Strome Slepyshev and Caggiula which could make those three range from lets say 6 to 8 million
On the blueline Nurse and Benning will be due raises as well, they almost have to hope that Nurse sucks now lets say those two garner a minimum of 5
So that takes them to the cap with 17 players under contract.

Signing that lucrative contract will force them to move RNH, forcing Draisaitl to it play on McDavid's wing.

The most telling pressure points for me, when it comes to Leon Draisaitl’s protracted contract negotiations with the Edmonton Oilers, is this:
Why on earth would the player ever want to play elsewhere? And why would the team ever allow him to do so?
On what other team would Draisaitl be able to, A) play nightly with the pending “Best Player in the NHL?” Or B) Get second-line centre minutes with a first-line centre that commands as much attention from opposing lineups as Connor McDavid does?
We’re not saying Edmonton is the only team in the National Hockey League that gives us the feeling that a Stanley Cup championship is imminent. There are a few teams like that (Toronto, Dallas, Calgary) and a few other mainstays (Pittsburgh, Chicago, Washington, Anaheim) that could win it any year as well.
But find me a landing spot for Draisaitl that has a better chance than Edmonton of putting a ring on his finger. There isn’t one, and the big German is in on the ground floor of this project, and quite possibly could be wearing a letter in that photo, if the Oilers ever do gather around Big Stanley after a victory in June.

My first response is
My second is that Draisaitl would play elsewhere for the usual reason - more money.
My third is that there are plenty of teams closer to a cup than Edmonton, and that includes teams he could play for as at least a second liner (sure they'd have to juggle salary but who doesn't have to do that).

Spector is just trying to hedge his bets (remember last season in late January when he declared that the Flames would not catch the Oilers in the standings). To be fair, the Oilers did end the season with more points than the Flames, but the Flames did catch them before season end.
