One of the things I like about this team is that the vets all have different experiences to bring to the table. Stajan is a guy who has changed his role to fit what the team needed. Brouwer has deep PO experience and has played on teams with elite players. Gio is a guy who was undrafted at every level, yet persevered to be a top player in the league. Backlund is a guy who has slowly progressed to be a really good player, and who has dealt with injuries early on. Versteeg has been through a (likely humbling) PTO experience.

I agree they all have a roll to play. Without access to some alternate universe, it is hard to quantify the vet presence. Would Monahan, Gaudreau etc be the same players they are today without the vets? I don't think we will ever know. I do know that when you look at the first few failed Oiler rebuilds there is something to having a veteran core.

As incredible as it'd be to see Iginla suit up 1 last season for the Flames, I just don't think it can happen. With Poirier, Shinkaruk, Lazar, and Hathaway all no longer holding waiver exempt status, we cannot afford to keep an older, slower, depth player on the roster and risk losing 1 of these guys, who have the potential to contribute to this club for 5+ years.
Losing Byron on waivers still stings.

I think most may just look at the cap hit and value on the ice, but if surrounding the young players with a player who helps in their development, maybe it is worth the cap hit. Probably next to impossible to quantify, but smarter hockey people than me seem to think there is some to it.
|
I agree about Stajan but not sure about Brouwer. Stajan constantly gets props from the young players on the team. He has been an overload bottom 6 centre here for 7 years but at least he has some value to the organization.
While I don't think he is going anywhere if the Pens did offer some kind of draft pick compensation the. The Flames should move that salary. Certainly Jankowski or Lazar can take his role on the ice and adding a Jagr or Iginla should be able to help fill the off ice void

For some reason my brain always wants to spell that word roal. I have no idea why. Role just doesn't look right to me.
Anyway, I don't think trading current vets off the roster is a good idea. Maybe I'm leery of the Andrew Ference effect, but I still think Stajan has an important role in the room and should be kept around.
Iginla would compete pretty hard in what will likely be his last season. Maybe that's the kick in the ass the young guys need to take a big step forward?

I just have a hard time with "Brouwer's leadership intangibles", teaching the boys how to be ineffective on the ice while milking your salary for all its worth. No matter how good you are in the room, go out here in the game and give a sh%t.
That being said I hope he bounces back in a big way this year. Just have my doubts.

Yeah, I wish he would just announce that the Flames are not going to sign Iginla. At least people could stop talking about the possibility if he did.

Boohoo people are talking about bringing Iginla back while he remains a UFA in a slow summer. I mean thankfully we've had this topic otherwise the lull of no hockey would be more brutal IMO. Always good to have distractions to talk about during the off-season and whether you want him back or not speculating about Iginla's last stop has been fun.

If Iggy returns, how will that make Jankowski feel? Was the Jankowski pick a good one and how did Iggy feel when the Flames picked Jankowski?
Jankowski!
