Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2017 - Round 10

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Calgarypuck's 5th Annual Prospect Ranking Poll Series

Here are the last 5 years for a quick glance ...
Prospect Rankings

Happy voting!

Mangiapane time! This kid shows real potential - would hope he is an offensive threat again this year in Stockton and gets a chance in Calgary at some point.

Phillips for me.. he has the biggest high end ceiling out of all our forwards IMO as his toolbox is similar to that of Gaudreau's.

Votes Print for the 3rd time in a row, but only because door some reason I thought Rittich was already selected.

Kulak or Rittich for me here. Went with Kulak because he plays the more valuable position, is closer to the NHL and has a longer track record of success in North America.

I rank based on trade value. I went with Mangipane because I think he has some offensive upside. Kulak's ceiling doesn't seem very high to me.

That said you could argue a young cheap dman might still be worth more than an undersized kid who has a chance to be a top two line winger. Dmen are worth so much more in trade than wingers in general. Guess it depends how much of a sure thing you think Mangiapane is and how limited you think Kulak's upside is.

What did Brodie look like when he was first breaking in compared to now? I'm not suggesting Kulak has Brodie's upside at all but Kulak looking like a bottom pairing guy so far doesnt mean with increased confidence that he couldn't be a 4/5 guy long term. Sometimes dmen really blossom in their early to mid 20's. I think Kulak certainly has the skill and skating to be more than a 6/7.

Dmen are just so valuable in the NHL. I think making the argument a value one actually helps Kulak's case not hurts it. Centres are comparable in value to dmen but wingers are IMO the least valuable assets in the NHL in general.

Probably 10-15 range:
-- Mangiapane
-- Kulak
-- Klimchuck
-- Poirer
-- Rittich
-- Philips

I honestly think any two of these guys could pan out

Other than Mark Jankowski, David Rittich was the best player on the Baby-Flames last year, and is very much a legitimate NHL prospect. It's him.

Mangiapane has had three amazing seasons in a row. No reason he can't become a Gallagher/Marchand type

I don't see Kulak as a guy getting my vote because he's going to be play and that's it though. He may be a 6/7 but I haven't written off the 4/5 role for him either. His underlying numbers were excellent last year with lame duck partners (limited ice time). Would love to see what he can do with a Michael Stone for 80 games.

Flames could have a pretty solid third pairing by the end of the season.

I went with Poirier as I feel he has more upside than Mangiapane, in the sense that he has a more complete skill-set: speed, power, feistiness, can score...

Lots to like if he takes the next step.

Due up next will be anyone of Poirier, Kulak and Klimchuk and Rittich - will be getting to the point where it becomes pick'em time.

There's no question Poirer's package is excellent, but Mangiapane has shown he has the drive to make the NHL.
