Congrats to Gio - couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
The ESPY's themselves are being broadcast live on ABC tomorrow night - I think Gio will get a mention as winner of the Mohammed Ali award during this show. Hope so anyway.

wow!
that's really great to hear... i was a little surprised that a hockey player from calgary got nominated... i've heard of the Espy awards before, but thought they were much more focused on the big 3 sports.
Congrats to Gio! amazing to see being recognized for his efforts off the ice.
here's another link that has a bit more info

Should mention as well that as part of winning this Gio gets a $100,000 grant from ESPN to add to his charity! Pretty cool.

Yup Todd Simpson, and now Mark Giordano a truly great and storied history of the Calgary Flames captaincy.
In all seriousness though this is a huge honour and one that the Mark and his wife should be really proud of.
To win an award like this that not only compares him to other NHLers but all North American pro athletes is no small feat.
IMO he truly is probably the greatest captain this team has seen off the ice and the awards that are piling up are proof of it.
The community is truly lucky to have him and a better player could not have been chosen to succeed Iginla as captain.

A pic of Gio accepting the award (he said Lauren wanted to be there but couldn't travel due to a baby they are expecting).

For any Canadian to win an ESPY award is incredible period it doesn't matter what award it is. For that athlete to be playing for a Canadian team and win is remarkable because the ESPY's are such an American heavy marketed show. What I am absolutely thrilled about is this is a relatively new award but it is named after the most famous celebrated legacy athletes ever. What an honor for Giordano to win this. It really is a amazing accomplishment and compliment to Gio's charitable work!

LOS ANGELES - For his tireless work in the community and his dedication to charitable causes, Mark Giordano has been named this year's ESPN Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Of The Year.
The award recognizes an athlete "whose continuous, demonstrated leadership has created a positive impact on their community through sports."
As the winner, the Flames captain will direct a $100,000 grant from ESPN to his charity, Team Giordano.
"It was really special, right from the start - watching the video of Muhammad Ali and then being able to win the award at the end of the night, I'm truly honoured," Giordano told CalgaryFlames.com.
"It's a pretty emotional night, pretty surreal for me right now."
|
Quote:
Following the summary of Giordano's work, ESPN reviewed the Ali's charitable contributions and how he impacted society with his work.
"Being forever linked to a man like this is something I'm going to cherish and really carry on and spend some time explaining to my children when they get older," he said.
Being around so many like-minded individuals over the past couple of days has been inspirational for Giordano and has fuelled his desire to help more people in his community.
"There's so many great people in the room tonight ... it's such a great event, I've never been a part of anything like it, to be honest.
"Tonight was another eye-opener - so many great people that you grow up idolizing and watching in the room with us tonight and you see the work they do in their communities."
|
Quote:
"He is so deserving," general manager Brad Treliving told CalgaryFlames.com. "And he doesn't do any of this for applause. He doesn't do it because he has to. He does it because he wants to.
"He doesn't do this for recognition or awards or any of that but you're always happy for a person who commits like he does to be recognized.
"We are fortunate to have Gio and his wife, Lauren, as a part of community."
