I'm highly doubtful he ever reaches the same offensive heights again.

Treliving needs to be all over this. Marchy would be a terrific fit on the first line.
This would be great any other time... but who comes off the Flames protection list? I like this kid, he plays with some grit.

The problem with the trades, as others have said, is that there aren't many teams with space to protect someone. I like Marchessault as a support piece but I wouldn't protect him over the other forwards we'll be protecting.

Edit: what he said ^^^^^

Lazar might not score 30 goals in his career let alone one season, I'd definitely protect Machessault over him. And I even like Lazar.

But the Flames are in a position right now where they won't be losing too great of an asset and I feel like they should stand pat until after the draft.

Age and province of origin.

In all seriousness though we would need to have two of Ferland, Lazar, Brouwer exposed. Which means we basically erase any small chance Vegas takes Brouwer the hell away from us.

You gotta give up assets to acquire Marchessault, and then you probably lose Lazar on top of that.

Plus, you gotta be careful with a player like Marchessault, as you don't want to get "Cory Conacher'ed"

Considering a 2nd was sent for Lazar.... no way would the Flames make that type of a move

Marchassault has pretty good underlying numbers, and his PDO at 97.2% suggests he was actually very unlucky this season.

I definitely didn't say he wasnt better than lazar.

He's been more productive than lazar by far (though he did cool off significantly last season after a hot start) but do you think the flames give up an asset for lazar only to trade another asset for Marchessault, losing Lazar in the expansion process? This, after waxing lyrical about how he's a ten year guy. Only saying that it doesn't make sense for us and would result in wasted assets and the appearance of poor management.

I'd love him in the team and think he's a great secondary scorer but I don't think we go hard at him is all.

Is there any possibility Florida would take Brouwer + for Marchessault? And then Florida leaves Brouwer exposed. They have cap space and are a small team? Then flames only have to do one deal with Vegas to protect either Lazar or Ferland? Just spit balling...

Why would Florida do that?

Assets for Marchessault. But I don't know, that's why I asked the question!

Wishful thinking maybe? No one in the NHL views Brouwer as low as Flames fans. Trying to see outside perspective. Panthers are small, maybe they have 'big physical winger' on their list of players to acquire (not the Brouwer brought anything last year, but he has a reputation).

Well Tallon did draft Brouwer... but yes it is more than likely wishful thinking.

??

That team is huge. They don't play that way at times, but size isn't an issue for them.

They have maybe 4 guys under 6'?

You take Jagr and Thornton out of that forward group and you have Bjugstad and Barkov... who are both giants. But I wouldn't describe their forward group as 'huge'.

Also I was unclear but I was specifically talking about their forwards.

The goals were scored playing with Jagr and Barkov, but he is a great player. Reminds me of Frolik. A package around Klimchuk+ (expansion-exempt) Lazar makes all kinds of sense for us.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Word is Tobias Enstrom has done WIN a huge favour, agreed to waive his NMC to help the Jets with the expansion draft.

For sure. They also have the flexibility to pick and choose the bad contracts in the NHL to fill their roster with warm bodies as their young guys develop. As long as they take the bad contracts that are 4 years or less. They can trade players of value that they get in the expansion draft for picks/prospects and take some bad contracts from teams in those trades as well... even better if it sweetens the deals to get better picks/prospects.
