Except Fox isn't even close to being as good of a skater as Karlsson. Fox has good agility and is strong on his skates, but he doesn't have anything resembling an explosive stride. I really think that lack of top end speed is going to hinder him as he progress to pro hockey.

If there is one thing a player can work on and improve, it is both the defensive side of the puck and his skating. You can not teach instincts. I will fathom a guess that if he ever does make the NHL he will be a Rafalski type Defenseman.

Fox has likely as much chance of being a career AHLer as he does being the next Karlsson. But that's not a knock on Fox, it's just that you are talking about Karlsson here.

Although the likelihood is something in between those two extremes.

And no, I don't expect him to flame out.

Looks like Bob McKenzie's final top 100 were accidentally posted early on TSN, and the page was taken down.

Here's a link to a screenshot of it:

Both Liljegrin and Foote available at #16 on his list.

With Hamilton only 24 and signed for 4 more years, Stone 27 and probably soon to be signed for 3 or 4 years, and Andersson just about ready for the NHL, you add Liljegren or Foote to the system to go along with Fox and you have to think RHD for the Flames is taken care of for a long, long time.

(24) Hamilton
(27) Stone
(21) Andersson
(19) Fox
(18) Liljegren/Foote

Liljegren available at 16? Can you imagine a Kylington-Liljegren pairing. The transition speed on D would be cra-cra.

I'm resigned to not getting Suzuki anymore but based on Treliving's high risk comment, I think it'll be liljegren if he's there. If not, based on a bit of cross referencing with button's list, perhaps a trade down for PO Joseph, poehling or yamamoto?

If that list is accurate and we get to choose between Liljegren and Tolvanen, I would be very happy. I think Liljegren would be a no brainer at that point, RHS defenseman who can skate, move the puck and defend like he can don't become available everyday and would be an extremely valuable asset to have.

With Treliving's high-risk comment, I'm thinking Vesalainen or Kostin. Both wingers with size. Both have high ceilings.

Not only can I imagine it, I pretty much already saw it last year in Josi-Ellis

I'm starting to feel like it would be a huge mistake to pass on Liljegren if he's still on the board at 16

Millions has just tweeted that Treliving still thinks we can do something dramatic at the draft, even without second or third rounders......

I was also thinking Hague as a high risk, high reward project.

A guy like Hague would be invaluable to have playing in our division if he could clean up his skating-big, nasty 2-way guy with hockey sense....

There is no player in that Top 100 list that had 100+ points this season. That seems to be pretty odd.

Ryan Ellis is the guy that jumps into my mind as a comparable. He's a good skater, but not a burner. He's also small but it hasn't held him back.

It would be interesting to compare their NHLE's in their draft and draft+1 years.

While I was looking at Adam Fox's stats it made me wonder about other USHL defensemen that played on the under-18 development team and their scoring rates.

While I was browsing through the lists something kind of jumped out at me for D in their draft year:

Clendening-0.65ppg(draft -1)
Werenski-0.58 (draft -1)
Forbort--0.54
Faulk-0.57
Skjei-0.50
Trouba-0.82
McAvoy-0.83 (draft -1)
Butcher-0.5
Belpedio-0.58
Dougherty-0.52
White-0.85
Krys-0.72
Fox-0.88

These are all the defenders from 2009 to present who have been drafted and put up 0.5ppg in their draft year on the Under-18 development list.

The thing I noticed is that there aren't any busts on the list. I mean Clendening is kind of trending out, and Butcher, Belpedio, and Krys haven't played an NHL game yet, but they were drafted 2013 and after. There is still a good chance they will.

Overall I think its a pretty strong list, and as a result I would bet on Fox playing some games in the NHL at the very least.

With the Smith acquisition, it seems a little more likely that the Flames will actually keep their first round pick this year.

It's looking like the Flames will probably draft a European, just based on that spreadsheet.
Juuso Valimaki seems like he'd be a good pickup.
Great document, by the way.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the flames draft a D this year. Last 7 first round picks that made it to the draft were used to pick forwards. I would love to have a D system like anaheim and Nashville where there is a surplus of quality nhl defensemen.

At this point I think Anderson has a shot at being a top 4 and Fox too if he can round out his game. Let's keep them coming.

Or if you subscribe to the draft BPA then a tie could at least be swayed to D.

Either way this is a chance for our scouts to earn their money - the mid to late first round always includes some gems and I hope we unearth one.
