I tend to wish that they would have adopted Anaxar, which was such a solid prelude story line and would have been a nice throw out to the fanbase.

The problem with sticking to these timelines is they box themselves into stories, and give in to the stupid temptation of fan service. Was that Spock in the trailer they were talking about? Great. And more Klingon stuff. Uh huh. How do you get creative with so many limits? 200 years in the future would have opened up so many more doors.

I suppose the only issue with doing a series in the future is that you're saddled with all the baggage of the previous series' techno babble. You'd have to factor in a pretty rapid increase in technology in TNG/DS9/VOY and continue to iterate on it further.

Or I suppose it could be the reverse, where warp technology truly does have disastrous consequences on the galaxy and they have to severely cut back on the use of it for real.

Either way, I'm sure fans would be all over any continuity errors they make when there's way more content beforehand to look over. A prequel can safely use those as a mark to make sure they don't touch.

Fans are going to crap over whatever you do. At least in the future story lines are less encumbered. The tech can go wherever as it is a set piece for the stories they want to tell. They just make it up when they need something to make the story work, as they have always done.

I don't have a ton of strong feelings about this show, but I'll definitely give it a try.

That being said, for anyone who is a Star Trek fan I highly suggest the podcast "The Greatest Generation".

It's two guys (who readily admit they are a little embarrassed to have a Star Trek podcast), who are watching all of the TNG episodes in order and then reviewing/ripping on them.

It's freaking hilarious. Seriously, everyone should listen to it.

That's interesting because Matt Mira (from Nerdist) is doing the exact same thing but his is called Start Trek the Next Conversation. They're 18 or so episodes into the first season.

You always forget terrible that first season was.

Or just make it 50 years after DS9/ Voyager. Use the line that warp drive had been damaging subspace, and they had just found a workaround. Build the series based upon the fleet being rebuilt and inter-galactic travel once again being a regular thing.

I'm still laughing at this. Because of course he did...is there any video?

Yeah, The Greatest Generation is half way through season 6 already.
Like I said, it's a great podcast, definitely worth a listen.

And yeah, that first season really was bad.

I still think Robot Chicken inadvertently stumbled on the best Star Trek Series idea of all time.

The difference between the two is that in Next Conversation Matt Mira has seen all the episodes and Andy hasn't seen any so is watching them for the first time.

I'm guessing the Klingon sarcophagus ship art somehow relates to our funny looking Klingons -- there's clearly some sort of burial ceremony they're at, along with a ornate coffin that has a more 'traditional' looking Klingon designed on it (Kahless?). Perhaps they got stuck in some sort of temporal loop and a Federation ship just happens to be the one present when they come out of it. And those 'Klingon warp signatures' they detect are the actual Klingons of the era coming to check it out as well.

Considering they didn't even show the Discovery in this trailer, I feel like it's design and crew will relate heavily to the events of this first episode. Like it is some sort of joint Federation/Klingon initiative, as previously speculated.

Or the Klingons just look a lot different now and there will be no explanation. Wouldn't be the first time!

Sept 24 premier:
Quote:
CBS announced the premiere date today, confirming that the second episode would be made available directly after the premiere finished through the network’s stand-alone streaming app, CBS All Access. The show's premiere will be the only episode to air on CBS proper; the rest of the episodes will stream via All Access. Those outside of the United States and Canada will be able to watch Discovery through Netflix.

Really? So I pay out the arse for cable, and have Netflix, but I still won't get the show unless I pay even more money? Nice try CBS.

Last thing I need is another streaming app, Netflix and regular cable is enough for me, I'm not paying $5.99 a month for basically a single show.

Sounds like it will actually be on Space and later CraveTV. Licensing is such a mess.

Isn't this the inevitable end-game when everyone is cutting their cable subscriptions? You want to pay separately for what you want? Get ready to pony up for a bunch of different services.

It probably is going to be the ultimate end game.

I'll eventually end up going that way. Stream CFL, NHL, NFL. Stream my news for free and then grab a crave and Netflix or whatever for my movies and tv series.
