Knife-in-the-back gesture at City council prompts integrity complaint, seat change
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...aint-1.4115371

Quote:
A Calgary city councillor's back-stabbing hand gesture in the direction of a female colleague has prompted her to change seats and a fellow councillor to file a complaint to the integrity commissioner.
Coun. Ward Sutherland made the gesture during a public hearing last week, extending his arm and appearing to repeatedly make a knife-twisting motion with his hand toward Coun. Druh Farrell as she was speaking, her back turned to him.
Sutherland then appears to mimic the reaction of someone who is in pain.
|
Quote:
He later denied the gesture was directed at Farrell, saying it was actually meant as a message to another colleague, Coun. Andre Chabot.
Chabot — who sits in that same direction and is out frame in the camera angle of council's in-house video broadcast — agreed with that assessment.
In a tweet, Chabot said the gesture was meant to express "that one of our colleagues had just stabbed me in the back."
He has declined to explain exactly what that means, describing it as a private matter.

I saw this on twitter. It looks really overblown to me. If Sutherland's intention was to gesture to stab Farrell in the back, of course it's bad, but it doesn't appear that that is the case.

You'd think that they have more important things to discuss these days.
Unless they solved all those issues before this?

Of course, Sutherland is being pretty defensive about the incident, which he would have no reason to do if he was completely innocent.

At least he didn't do the jerk-off gesture.

He blocked Druh Farrell on twitter today as well after he issued an apology.
Can we just purge our entire CC and get some fresh faces in?

So dramatic.

Agree with it being sent to the Integrity Commission. Obviously this was NOT appropriate.
However, I do not agree that he is a woman-hater because of this... maybe he's just a Druh Farrel hater (aka a normal person)?

Why should the integrity commissioner be involved? Is it really all that inappropriate to mime that she's stabbing someone in the back? It's hardly a horrific accusation in politics.

No kidding. Farrell's been able to milk a career out of this and I believe 15+ years is long past her expiry date. What the hell is wrong with Ward 7?

I see it didn't take Diane Colley-Urquhart to storm into this to try and score some political points. Was it stupid to do? Yes Was it an attacked against woman? Give me a break.
Getting a little tired of this card being played.

Must be a slow day at City Hall for this to be news worthy.

Whether you feel it's par for the course in politics or not, it was just dumb and childish, and Sutherland is looking like a huge baby in the aftermath.
It's great that politics can be idiotic, but that doesn't mean we should just nod and shrug when it is, or it'll just get worse. I don't see it as much of an issue, but it's enough that Sutherland should be fairly embarrassed for looking like the class clown on City Council. He's an elected official there to represent other people, and an adult, afterall.

Not in Calgary, I'm sure, but folks might be shocked and alarmed at the disfunction that exists in some municipal councils around Alberta. There are several government-commissioned reviews in progress or yet to start that were ordered for various reasons. My experience is that the smaller municipalities like the counties and smaller towns are more likely to err than the larger, more sophisticated municipalities. Some of these transgressions are like this one - public bickering (or worse). Local councillors are keeping these consultants busy.

These children need to grow up and do their g-damn jobs. I blame Nenshi for creating this grade school atmosphere and leading the charge with his catty demeanor and childish squabbles. Brian Pincott is playing the part of the tattling little rat fink perfectly. Druh is just sopping up all the attention. Ward is the bully jock, Chabot his nerdy bud egging him on. Chu is the weird kid. I could go on, how did we end up with these clowns?

I wonder if female politicians realize that turning ever single incident where someone is rude to them into a gender issue is undermining their credibility. Remember, the reason women weren't regarded as credible politicians back in the bad old days is because people said they were too fragile. Imagine what a Sue Higgins would have thought of the outrage and handwringing that goes on today.
