Little surprised by the decision, as I thought they were playing hardball and would ultimately go since the players seemed eager to go.

Wonder how things will unfold with key players saying they'll go no matter what.

Pretty sad day. What will be worse is if we watch a patchwork Team Canada lose to Ovechkin and friends.

Hopefully they will be back in 2022.

Yep. So stupid. Every other international hockey tournament pales in comparison to the Olympics.

Good. The players weren't willing to extend the CBA, this is what they deserve.

Pretty good reminder that the owners of NHL teams are not actual fans of the game.

Makes sense. If the NHL is not getting enough out of it, not worth it for them to send them all the way over there. They can find ways to grow the game over there in different fashion. Hockey will still be played, so people will still get introduced to the sport if they aren't aware of it already.

The NHL got the World Cup of Hockey as their international event. They just need to commit to it on a consistent schedule.

The owners have been making it clear for at least five years that they didn't feel like there was any real gain for them to go. They felt that they took all the risks and received none of the benefits. Given none of the NHLPA, IIHF or IOC were willing to change the equation, I'm not all that surprised.

Hopefully people will get more invested in the World Cup now.

Good for them. The IOC should've stepped up. NHL didn't want the money from the IIHF as that would be money taken away from the other federations.

Team doctors do not have access to the athletes if there is an injury. The NHL cannot show any hilights of any of the games.

I'm glad the NHL is not going. I can see the World Cup being a big deal like the Canada Cup was prior to Olympic participation.

I bet Ted Leonis will change his tune and will no longer publicly state that AO would be allowed to go to the Olympics. I would even bet that AO won't be going next year.

Would the IOC use this against a Canadian bid in 2026?

Or alternatively would they be more inclined to return to North America where the chances of NHL participation are much greater?

I'll just copy my post from the other thread I posted in.

Timing seems very odd to me.

But let me get this straight. To avoid overshadowing the playoffs, they decided to announce it right before the playoffs start? Seems legit.

I don't blame the NHL for not wanting to go to a country that rhymes with diarrhea

Why do you hope that? I don't care about it all, and this won't change that.

Oh come on, like you don't know why. Because if the World Cup is the only best on best Men's tourney, it should eventually gain the prestige of the Olympics.

When it goes to only countries, no gimmick teams, and establishes a regular rotation it will almost certainly catch on.

The only thing is that it will likely stay in NA for the foreseeable future.
