Did you guys have Luria's or Service Merchandise up there?
Basically the same idea - you looked in the catalog or at the display, filled out an order form, and they got it from the mysterious "back".

Makes me sad.

I always attributed that smell to the soles on cheap shoes.

Haven't heard of those stores but it was the same thing. Fill out the form and came back a few hours later. Sometimes if something was out of stock you had to come back a couple of days later. Crazy that these places didn't capitalize on the online buying train.

Mission belts are the best. I finally wore one out, took over 2 years of abuse. The only flaw they have is that they tend to tear away from the buckle if you wear your belt tight. You can just keep trimming 1/2 inch off every 4 months or so but eventually you run out of strap. Of course you can just order a replacemt strap which is what I did. Well worth the money either way.

The smell is definitely a mixture of cheap leather and plastic with a hint of perfume if you walk through the right areas.
I'm going to miss Sears. I purchased my suits there for like 70% off. Other than that, however... meh. Ours is taking up valuable real estate in the mall.

In the old Eaton's store, where Holt Renfrew is now.
When Eaton's went bankrupt in the late 90s, Sears bought their assets. They converted the suburban mall locations (like Southcentre) into Sears stores or sold them off if they already had a Sears in the same mall.
For their flagship downtown stores, they tried to revive the Eaton's brand as a higher-end retailer. When that bombed, they converted the downtown Eaton's store into a Sears as well. That also failed and Sears eventually pulled out and Holt Renfrew took over the space.
According to Wikipedia, it was a Sears store from about 2002 to 2008.

This isn't an actual announcement, it is just a legal requirement for the US version related to their financial statements. Management has to evaluate whether there is a reasonable uncertainty they can continue as a going concern. Since Sears will be toast at any time if suppliers stop extending them credit, they have to put it in for but covering reasons. If Eddie Lampert is still willing to spend the money they get from selling remaining valuable assets on operating losses they can keep going for a few more years. They just sold Craftsman, and they Kenmore plus the rest of their real estate would be worth something.

I was in the Sears in Red Deer yesterday, they seemed to have a good stock of appliances and Clothing bit that was about it. Hardly any tools.
They did have like 40 snowblowers in there though. .

That's were I bought my Lawn mower years ago. I got a smoking deal on the floor model and wheeled it out the store through TD square to the C-Train and home. I got some odd looks.
As an aside, that mower is still going strong, 15 years later.

Had a Sears-branded 10-speed as a junior high schooler, and later a Eaton's-branded touring bike as a post-collegiate.

I think the Sears store closures/clearance starts this weekend but the only store slated to close in Calgary is the home store at Glenmore and Deerfoot. I'm in need of a new hood fan and and a countertop oven. Is that the kind of stuff they stick at the home store that I might be able to get a good deal on?

Liquidation sales are rarely any good. Another company comes in and reprices everything higher, then slaps discount tags on.

I bought my TV during the Target liquidation - I took a picture of the price at Target, then went to Visions to get them to match the price.

You can get good deals on liquidation when it's done using a dutch auction.

When did the Marlborough Mall Sears close?
I went there on Black Friday last year so I know it's relatively recent. I was surprised when I drove by recently and saw it was gone.
