Oh, sad to hear that. Sometimes when we'd pass him near the safeway and he was panhandling, he'd give my son a quarter from his collection, and sometimes we'd buy him a cookie and give it to him on our way back. I never really talked with him but he seemed like a genuinely nice guy from those interactions.

Moving into the neighbourhood for Feb. 1. Love the area and all the great little pubs/restaurants it offers.

Are there any great current weekday specials to be aware of? Open to anything and everything.

Awful name, but The Spesh app is a good place to start.

Examples:

Winebar - Sunday, 1/2 price bottles of wine

Side Street - $5 pints Granville Island, Tuesday

Tenth Street Landing - $5.25 domestic pints, Tuesday, 25 cent wings on Wednesday

Side Street 1/2 price pizza wednesday

Sidestreet pub for wings on Monday and Saturday I believe. Also on Thursdays they have a burger night where it is 9.99 for all their burgers. Very good burgers for a pub/sports bar

Went to Modern Steak. The Waygu Ribeye I ordered was terrible. Sent it back, next one was terrible. Half an inch thick, dry, chewy, no evidence of marbling. Thankfully they took it off the bill.

On a positive note, went to Hayden Block today with my brother-in-law and had hands down the best BBQ ever, including numerous meals in the southern US, and it wasn't even close. The brisket and beef rib in particular where out this world succulent.

Hayden block is legit. I need to stop going to half off meats and waking up with meat sweats and regret.

Keith might be the best bartender in town.

Went to the new Reds this morning for breakfast before work. Was great like the other location in Mission I have been to. Their credit card machine wasn't working so they gave us breakfast for free which was nice.

Will definitely be back.

Our menu is a collection of classic Italian comfort food, revisited with a modern flare.

Yah looks like it.

I don't think it will be successful. That location is better suited for retail.

Pie Junkie (formerly Pie Hole) is opening a Kensington location this summer. Location is somewhere by Red's but I'm not exactly sure where. They have a location by Wildwood currently and sell delicious sweet and savory pies. I'm looking forward to picking up pies on my walk home.

I'm going to be a bit of a jerk, but I honestly think these places don't last because they're not that good. Everything that goes in there seems mediocre. I liked the place before Pie Cloud, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. Even Pie Cloud was ok, but there wasn't anything that drove me to return. The inside at Pie Cloud was minimally renovated. It just looked hack.

Now this Italian place looks like another go with the same formula. Looked at the website at it just looks like a low budget concept. I would like to see something polished go in there, and I think it could work. For example Hayden Block has a great location, but I think if they started out where Pie Cloud was they could have made it. The concept is good and decently executed, and the food is good.

This just looks like another version of throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks, but invest minimal effort. I give it 6-9 months. Hope I am wrong, but we'll see.

Look forward to reviews, but you go first

The pulled pork eggs benny at pie cloud was amazing. Everything else meh at best.

I agree with you though. The chances I go to this place is very low. I'd rather just order delicious thai food from Delicious Thai next door.

John Gilchrist: Cotto strikes la dolce vita balance of modern Italian comfort food

http://calgaryherald.com/life/food/j...n-comfort-food

Giuseppe Di Gennaro — is familiar to the Calgary dining scene. He and his wife Fiona have partnered with Dana and Rob Campbell to serve what they call “Classic Italian in a Modern World.”

Maureen DePatie and her Pie Cloud team did some excellent work on it, including buffing up the large kitchen, laying new flooring and bringing in new furniture. The Cotto team has enhanced that with whitewashed barn wood walls, marble-topped tables and a sliding door separation that hives off a room for a couple dozen. The look, complete with the original skylight and long bar, is casual and comfortable with seating for 44 in the main room.

The kitchen team has struck a tone appropriate for the neighbourhood, somewhere between the elegant, high-end Capo and the lively, family-style Borgo. Cotto’s dinner menu is focused around a list of pastas
