For the last few days I've been trying a few online games for the first time in years. Definitely don't understand why that's such a big focus for the devs, it's pretty infuriating. Nobody plays actual hockey, they just know the tricks and weak spots of the game

No different than Madden. Every year EA makes tweaks that change the balance of the game and players unearth plays that are unstoppable in that year's build. I like to use a lot of different plays for different circumstance but I've been crushed by guys that run a small handful of unstoppable runs and short passing plays over and over.

This is my approach when playing my son. I can only beat him by jobbing the game.

It drives him crazy.

It raises an interesting question: is there a way to make a sports game that doesn't have little exploits?

Golf is the only sports game I have played on PS4 that you can't exploit.

Perhaps in the future when there is more computing power and the ai can learn. The biggest reason exploits work is the computer has no memory to stop a repeated behavior.

The reason a cross crease pass would work so well is the computer always plays the shooter 100 percent. So it is always beneficial to pass. If the computer could realize that it was going to always be a pass it could adjust and cover it better. That would then allow the player to take the shot sometimes and hope for the best. Instead the shot has 0 percent chance and pass has 75 percent. Just as an example.

I'm on the fence with Madden as to me some of the exploits are from learning the audibles, and using the depth of options available like pre-snap adjustments. I have played players that will play the entire game out of the I formation or shotgun. Typically I would play a 3-4 or 4-3 zone defense against I formation to which he will recognize and audible to a quick slant that is impossible to stop in zone. Next snap I play man and he sticks with the run and gashes me for 6 yards. Rinse and repeat. It's like a chess game where I try to mix up cover 2 man, etc. I just can't compete with the man hours some of these guys put into the game and even though I consider myself a good player I'm no match for some of these guys.

I saw this game for 80 freaking dollars at Best Buy today. Seriously? Hasn't it been six months since it was released?

Ouch. It's $26 right now on the Playstation Network. Hopefully nobody buys it at that price.

So I just looked now on Xbox Live and the game is 59.99 without EA Access. But I can get it for free if I have EA Access (which I don't). Can I sign up for one month of access, download the game, and then cancel my Access while keeping the game? I don't know anything about how this stuff works.

If you join EA Access and want it for free you have to stay a subscriber.

It's $5/month or $29/year (https://www.costco.ca/Xbox-One-EA-Ac...100290407.html) if you buy the subscription card from Costco.

I have EA access. Well worth the purchase. For $30/year, you get all the EA games on the app for free, as long as pay the yearly subscription. However if you cancel the subscription, you lose the games. The key is to keep your subscription active. For $30/year , it's well worth it.

You get all the sports games, shooters, racing, etc. The only downfall is you have to wait for the games to be put on the list, so you won't play them brand new. But if you are willing to wait, then it's well worth it. I had to wait until now to get NHL '17. I want to play Battlefield 1 and Mass Effect Andromeda, but I'm willing to wait ~8 months so I can pretty much play them for free.

IMO its one of, if not the best, video game deals out there.

I finally bought myself an Xbox One S last week, was about to throw down money for both Fifa and NHL. This seems like a great option.

I'm actually considering skipping out on getting NHL 18 at launch this year and just subscribing to EA Access and waiting for it to come out there. I don't play sports games as frequent as I used to so I'm starting to feel like I'm not getting my money's worth by getting it at launch.
