Escobar's son comments on the series

  1. La Quica was in prison in New York at the time of Escobar's escape from La Catedral in July 1992, having been jailed in September 1991 for falsifying documents. He was later unjustly accused and sentenced of the Avianca bombing which killed 100 passengers and crew and even the Colombian attorney-general De Grieff wrote letters to the US on his behalf; Escobar insisted the 1989 attack was in fact carried out by Carlos Castaño on his orders.
  2. There was no large confrontation during Escobar’s escape from La Catedral - only one guard was killed. Also Escobar did not have any contacts or help from the law in escaping. He escaped by ordering for some bricks in the cell to be left loose. He fled when the government told him they had reneged on their agreement not to transfer him to another jail.
  3. Limon worked as a driver for Roberto ‘Osito’, Pablo Escobar’s older brother for 20 years. He did not appear nor was recruited later by Escobar’s family, but had been in their service many years. On the show they speak of a worker of Roberto called ‘Osito’ who collaborated with the DEA. The reality was that Osito became disloyal in Escobar’s final days and helped in intelligence gathering for Los Pepes and the DEA.

The series "Lord of Evil" (Patron del Mal), also on Netflix gets these facts right.

I assume these are just artistic license

To necro this a bit.. season 3 should be out fairly soon, no? Looking forward to the story shifting to the Cali cartel.

Really? They set it up pretty well that Cali was the focus at the end of the season.

I went into this thinking it was a show about Escobar, not about the cartels in general.

I think they realized they messed up when they killed of Escobar and alot of other people without going into alot of those other people's business like Carlos lehder who was a big part of the drug business but made him seem like a small part in everything.

I mentioned it in the TV thread but if you needed a fix until the third season starts the Univision series "El Chapo" is pretty good. I know it's on US Netflix, not sure about Canadian.

It's a little lower budget obviously and entirely in Spanish but I liked it. Worth checking out.

Just an FYI that Season 3 is on Netflix now. I'm about halfway through, and it's been pretty good so far, even if there's not necessarily one character who is as compelling as Escobar was.

I'm about four episodes in.

Spoiler!

Totally agree about Escobar. Toward the end of season two, they really began humanizing him. He was still a monster, but there was a lot of depth there.

I do like the character development so far in season three and
Spoiler!

The one thing that is nice with this season is that unless you know your cartel history or go snooping on Wiki, it's a bit more of a mystery in terms of the storyline. Pretty much everyone knows about Escobar's death, so I feel like last season you kind of just waited for the inevitable rooftop shootout. Personally, besides the name, I never really knew too much about the individuals running the Cali Cartel, so unless I go and ruin it for myself, it's still a mystery how it ends.

Me, too. I know odds and ends, but not the full details. It's interesting seeing how it all plays out in the series.

Spoiler!

Great season IMO. Considering half the dialogue is in a foreign language and I generally hate watching anything with subtitles I think they did an amazing job on this.

My brother recommended El Chapo to me. Very similar to Narcos, I've enjoyed it.

They really did.

I just wrapped up season three last night.

Spoiler!

The casting for the series has been spot on.

Spoiler!

On another note: I may have missed it, but was Griselda Blanco ever brought up over the three seasons? I believe she was part of the Medellin Cartel.

The subtitles don't bother me much. What is funny is my kid's reactions to the show when they happen to be in the room if it's on. Normally they don't watch it (doing homework etc.) but sometimes they will be in the room when my wife and I are watching. They are both fluent in Spanish and the smirks, raised eyebrows, and looks they give are priceless sometimes. We ask them if the subtitles are an accurate translation and they usually answer with something like 'yeah but you don't want to know what the literal meaning of what they just said is'.

Great series, can't wait to watch Season 3.
