Right, but we're not talking a 50% chance. Even if Buffalo thought Vesey was willing to play for any team other than Nashville, that's a 3.44% chance. If Buffalo suspected that Vesey only wanted to play for one team, that's either a 0% chance or a 100% chance, so either way, it's a waste of a pick.
It sounds like it was a 0% chance. This is the same kid who gave up a top 6 role in one of the best teams and favorites for making a playoff push. Why would he go from such a club to a basement dweller?

A smarter move would be to package all four 3rd rounders and trade for an asset equivalent to Vesey.

Except no one would do that. A Vesey-level prospect would be one of the best in hockey. No way a prospect of that caliber would go for a bunch of mid picks like that. The Flames wouldn't trade Jankowski for four 3rds and he isn't nearly as highly regarded as Vesey is. A prospect as good as him would never be available under normal circumstances, that's why Buffalo is taking a chance.

We don't know what happened behind the scenes. Maybe Vesey told Eichel that he wanted to play on the same team, and Eichel told Murray, and Murray said "ok, let's see if that's true". And Vesey is like, "Lulz, no man. I meant you should trade Eichel to Boston"....

Once he signs in Toronto I hope there's an investigation on tapering I do think the leafs have been. The fact that his dad was in on the negotiations with the preds is a huge red flag for me .if he wasn't a leaf employee I would care but he is and he should not be in on the negotiations on his sons contract. That's why he has a agent now .but we all know the league will do nothing.

I think it makes sense to take the risk if it's a conditional pick... but straight up with no contract in place?
What an idiotic move.
It's not like some of the best players in the NHL right now weren't selected in the third round and later.

Are teams even allowed to reach out to the kid/agent before they attempt to make a trade??

If Nash agrees to it yes, wouldn't surprise me here since Nash was looking at a nothing return otherwise.

It's really not hard to comprehend. It would be no different from choosing "GoWhalersGo" when I did, as the Jets hadn't existed in ten years when I chose the username.
But I get that it's easier to try and lash out at me than acknowledge how terrible this trade looks with the agent comment.

Don't see how this is a terrible move?
You gamble a pick that has very little chance of working out (and you have a lot of them) for two months worth of exclusive negotiation rights for a guy who can apparently step right into your top 6 lineup.
Low risk, huge upside. Sends a strong statement to fans that you are doing everything you can.
And if he does doesn't sign, meh.
I like it a lot.

Its annoying that everyone wants to pick a winner or loser literally minutes after a trade happens. That comment was made before ANY negotiation had even happened -- so of course nothing had changed yet. There's no reason for a Sabres fan to not be optimistic.
Even if he ultimately doesn't sign, the trade still has value. Murray would know that the Sabres are definitely not an option, 2 months before anyone else does, then be able to adjust his draft/off-season plan around that. Maybe that knowledge just on its own is worth one of our 4 (!) third round picks.
But yeah, I know fans of other teams just itch to dump all over other team's moves way before there's a reason to. Everyone wants to look like a genius.

FWIW, they just replayed a clip from McGuire earlier on TSN radio Montreal (before trade) who said a birdie told him to watch out for Sabres to sign Vesey.

I bet he signs. The posturing from the agent is probably to make it seem like there wasn't tampering, which we know there probably was from a classless organization like the Sabres

Agent expands on comments:

Says Buffalo is likely on Vesey's short list, but since he has gone this far, he might as well go all the way to August 15.
