The link above (Interpreter Mag) has a daily blog regarding the situation in Ukraine. Probably the best source of information I've found. It has some additional information relating to the Pskov Airborne company being wiped out.

Isn't a division like 10000 soldiers? That seems like a lot of airborne to lose that quickly... unless they deserted or Russia has a lot more soldiers in the area that NATO knows about.

I don't think the division was wiped out, I think that one company of the 76th airborne was wiped out, which means about 80 men.

yeah if you can decimate a company of airborne troops, especially from the Russian 76th Airborne Division which is very highly regarded its a good day.

A company is only a hundred to a couple hundred though no? It says 1st company, not the whole division.

This is the Division.

I've corrected my post. As someone else pointed out, the article was referring to one company within the Division. Should re-read what I write before posting.
As has been the case for the last while, clear evidence that troops are in Ukraine. Of course, Russia will do everything it can to deny.

I think it's important to remember that it doesn't matter much.
After all, Russia is attacking Ukraine and not the other way around.

Haven't we also ended up getting confirmation of Ukraine was saying all along some time afterwards?
Ukraine: Russian troops are posing as rebels in Crimea, check
Ukraine: Russian artillery is being used within Ukrainian borders, check by satellite a bit later
Ukraine: Russian troops are invading south east Ukraine, check by rebel commander saying troops are just on vacation
Actual numbers are up to scrutiny right now, though one side has consistently denied any involvement and up till satellite footage and dead/captured Russian soldiers outted the truth.

Good news I guess depending on agreement and whether Russia keeps their end.
Quote:
Ukraine and Russia reach 'permanent ceasefire' agreement, Kiev says
|
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...agreement-kiev
Quote:
Ukraine and the West have accused Russia of sending its troops and weapons to support pro-Russian insurgents who have been fighting government troops in eastern Ukraine since mid-April. Moscow has vehemently denied this charge.
That denial leaves unclear how effective the truce announced Wednesday would prove to be. After a meeting with Poroshenko last week, Putin had said no cease-fire was discussed because Russia was not a party to the conflict.
|
So we'll see if the separatists agree to the ceasefire or it's just another ploy by Putin to absolve Russia of blame.

Wow... that came apart faster than the Hamas, IDF agreement. That lasted two hours at least.

Yeah, when I first ran across the story, I was thinking it might even be fake but there were a few sources reporting it. I guess it wasn't fake but it didn't have a lot of substance either. All it shows is that the Ukraine President is anxious for a deal, which isn't a good bargaining position.

Russia to close airspace off to Western airliners as a retaliation for sanctions. Looks like trans-continentals will take a bit longer

Such a fragile balance as EU has to ramp up sanctions, but don't want to force Russia go nuclear (aka force shutting off gas sales, which would be equally as rough on Russia).
