Yeah, I thought it was funny that he was making cricket jokes but they went right over my head.

Not really. That's just the opening pun from the podcast. Listen to the rest of the show.

No real fun to be had watching any team lose that way. Most pundits on TV here were a bit shell shocked.

I'd switched off by half time because the excitement that those first 15 minutes promised were eliminated just 15 minutes later.

I'm dealing with Brazilians for some Petrbras jobs and they actually have had the last few days off as holidays. I guess I can tell them that being close to the Oiler country we are familiar with that type of defensive performance but it's probably just crushing for that country to see their team go full Oiler like that on the world stage.

But you forgot that a soccer game is 90 minutes long, so that 14 goals drops to 10.5 in a 60 minute game.

I don't see it that way - with breaks a hockey game takes 2.5 hours, a soccer game 2.0 hours. The point is, 7 goals in a soccer game is a crazy ass kicking. Bob McCown did a similiar calculation today, saying it is like 14 goals in hockey, and 18 runs in baseball.

The active playing time in a soccer game has been about 57 minutes in this tournament. So pretty much the same as a hockey game.

The length of the game has nothing to do with it here.

Not to continue this thread for too much longer, but here's a great little article by the Guardian's Barney Ronay.

I will keep banging the Guardian's drum until people start to listen to their football podcast. 😁
