Kipper closer to game action *UPDATE*: starting tonight!

Hartley says the goalie will take an even more active role in practices Monday and Tuesday. Then they’ll have a better read on the mainstay’s readiness.
“He’s feeling good,” said Hartley. “The doctors are here and they’re feeling good about him. The news is very positive. Whenever you see a goalie on the ice with his team, I think it’s always a good sign.”
While the Flames were on the road during the week, Kiprusoff skated on his own — taking shots from the injured Mikael Backlund (who, wearing a yellow don’t-hit-me smock, also briefly appeared during Saturday’s session).
“It’s always different — more speed (practising) with the team,” said Kiprusoff. “It wasn’t that many shots. It was more five on five play. I felt OK. It’s getting there. I’m pushing as quick as I can to play again.”
One reporter pointed out that Kiprusoff, when getting up after a butterfly save, appeared to need to his stick to get to his feet.
“Oh, I’ve been using that (method) anyways in practice every once in while,” said Kiprusoff. “It has nothing to do with my knee, for sure.”
Kiprusoff added that his knee was not hurt on a collision with Detroit winger Johan Franzen.
“You guys have the wrong play — (the injury) happened before that,” he said. “It was one play — I kicked my leg out (making a save).”
This marks only the second time in Kiprusoff’s association with the Flames that he’s missed significant time due to injury.
The first occurrence? Way back in 2004 when he was sidelined all of January, also with a knee issue.
“I’ve been pretty lucky that way,” he said. “I’ve been able to stay healthy.”
|
Pretty happy he's back participating in team practices and that he's close.
Also he didn't injure his knee because of Franzen, it was on an earlier save. Franzen is still a dbag though.

Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak
Not sure whether he could play Wednesday, but #Flames Miikka Kiprusoff (knee) pushed himself hard during practice today.

Good news.
I'm actually excited to have Backlund skating with the team again as well.

I was expecting late March, so if he's back even next week that's great news. Backlund's gotta be closer too. Hope we can stay healthy in the second half.
And yeah, MacDonald has to be the back-up IMO.

I think it depends on what the trade market is right now. Both Florida and Carolina are likely in the market for a goalie, either as an NHL backup, or someone to fill-in in the AHL while Ward and Theodore are out.
You have to think Feaster is working the phones shopping one of MacDonald, Taylor, or Irving depending on what those teams are willing to move.
My guess is that it will be one of the AHL guys on the move, and MacDonald getting a few starts in the back-to-back games. If he could move Irving for a 4th round pick like he did Karlsson (maybe even a third rounder since they're a little more desperate), I think it would be a good deal for both Irving and the team.

I do not think we can trade McDonald or is it that we can not send him down to the minors this year?

MacDonald can be traded, but he must first be offered to any team who put in a claim on him when he was first on waivers. I don't know if any other teams also put in claims.

Roger Millions @RogMillions
Danny Taylor leaves ice surface at #Flames practice. Wonder if he is heading back to Abby to make way for Kipper...
Roger Millions @RogMillions
I would not be surprised.

There should be no debate. MacDonald should be our backup the rest of the season if we stand a chance. I think he was a great pickup and although Taylor got the W on Sunday, MacDonald has much better rebound control and experience to handle the role.
I suspect Irving is on his way out for a fresh start if anything. Here's hoping Babchuk goes with him.

Better than I thought they would be, that's for sure. Should have been 7-4-2 (collapse against Colorado).

I was just hoping for .500 hockey so thats fine! Now if Kipper stays healthy for the rest of the year we should finish 3rd in the West.
