Was it actually one cheque? I just skimmed the article, and it didn't seem like they confirmed that.

The maximum allowable donation to a political party in Alberta from an individual person or company during an election campaign is $30,000. Elections Alberta said splitting donations is allowed in some circumstances.

Sounds like he wrote a cheque for $430,000 and then the PC's broke it up into smaller pieces to try and circumvent the rules.... or at least that's the way I read it.

The question is, if he gave them a cheque, and they broke it up to try and hide it, how do you punish them?

well officially,
Quote:
Documents made public by Elections Alberta on Wednesday record $300,000 in donations from Mr. Katz, his company, his family and business associates.
|
and this
Quote:
The documents released on Wednesday show $150,000 in donations from five members of the Katz family, at $30,000 apiece: Daryl; his wife, Renee; his mother, Ida; his father, Barry; and his company, Katz Group.
The disclosure also listed another $150,000 from four of Mr. Katz’s top employees and their companies: Paul Marcaccio, Bob Black, John Karvellas and James Low.
|
so 10 people gave $30000 each, which is allowed
the $430000 number is according to an unnamed source at the Globe and Mail, nothing official with Elections Alberta

Meh. Is this really an issue? Like First Lady said, the cheque may have been broken up legally. All's fair within the rules of law. Katz is able to donate to whomever he likes, no matter how he approaches it.
Maybe he likes the PC's so much that he wanted to give that money to help them, which is what thousands of political donors do all the time anyways.

I didn't vote for this party, and I do think it's a little sneaky- but let's not kid ourselves, this happens at every level of politics and ini every party.
I think people would be shocked if they heard half the rumors about our former mayor, and the federal parties.

If this was the WildRose or CPC party we'd be hearing howls of outrage from certain people on this board... LOL
Instead we get .... meh.... the rules were followed.

Not only that the Wildrose raised $3.1mil compared to the PC's $1.6mil. I"m sure there are some 'duplicates' in the $3.1 mil they got.

Only going by what I read in the OP.
As far as being stupid.. aren't we talking about the same person who is involved in the arena extorsion / blackmail fiasko with Edmonton city council?

Right, but nothing illegal happened here...Immoral? You betcha. But if we're going to scold political parties on the basis of immorality, there wouldn't be any political parties in the world. The Wildrose, PCs, CPC, Liberals, Democrats, Republicans, Tea Partiers....doesn't matter. They all bend (and break) the rules, so lets not go around placing nobility on some while slamming others. They're all part of the same machine.

Yeah, that party was totally ready to govern.
They would have been a disaster. Give them one more term and maybe they'll actually be ready.

With regards to this, scolding is well deserved, no matter what the political stripe.
A meh attitude just ensures that stuff like this continues.

Why do you continue to make a big deal out of nothing? Everyone is allowed to donate whatever they want, and if they can do it within the rules of the law, what is the problem?
Perhaps Katz gave $30,000 to each person that WANTED to give to the PC Party, but just didn't have the money. He gave them to money to donate, because he HAS the money.
I'm not sure what your issue is here. Katz didn't put a gun to these people's heads and demand that they give the PC's money. He probably asked if they wanted to.
