NHL eyes 2024 World Cup of Hockey play in Europe and North America
Quote:
The NHL is continuing to move forward with plans to hold the World Cup of Hockey in 2024 and hoping to play the tournament on two continents, deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed Wednesday.
"We're moving full steam ahead and that means we're continuing to have regular meetings," Daly said during the NHL's European Player Media Tour, per NHL.com.

Good. It's about time we get to see Lindholm, Markstrom, and the like get their due on the international stage.

Watching Huberdeau score the game winner against the Americans with Gaudreau and Tkachuk on the ice is going to be glorious.

Never could bring myself to care much about this tournament. I would much prefer that NHL players return to the Olympics.

2 continents is stupid.
Pick a host city that isn’t Toronto.
Put it in New York, or Vegas, or LA. Have a proper best on best showcase that isn’t overstuffed with myopic Leaf fans.
Oh, and here’s a quirk.
Every 4 years, do a World Cup.
Two years later, the World Cup champion plays Team World in a 7 game series.

Why can't they do something similar to every other world cup in every other sport? Pick a host country, then in 4 years, pick another host country. Do it every 4 years.
This world cup is always just a giant meh for me whenever they decide to hold it.

It’s meh because they don’t do it consistently.
1996, 2004, 2016?
You can’t build a tradition around something that happens every 8-12 years.
And I agree that gimmick teams shouldn’t be in a tournament - the conceit of my gimmick is to ultimately get Canada vs the World for 7.

As long as it's all the same players, what's the difference? I'm sure they'd all prefer to be in Europe or North America than do whatever the IOC wants.

Having it in February and not summer is a good first step. Without Russia though, it would lose a lot of luster.

Don’t exclude Russia. Keep them in and humiliate them.
We used to do that all the time.
It’s one of the things that made us awesome.

If they could make this a consistent thing without the gimmick teams like last time, I'd be so on board. Been too long since we've had a proper best on best international tourney

An Olympic Gold medal is much more coveted than the gross glass-thing that the NHL hands out. Most players will say that it's second only to winning a Stanley Cup. As a result, the level of play is much closer to play-off hockey, rather than the slightly-better-than-exhibition level of hockey that we see during the World Cup.

The World Championships every fourth year should become the World Cup that is hosted in a rotating countries similar to the soccer World Cup.
The NHL season should be condensed and start in September during World Cup years to make sure all the best hockey players are available for the World Cup.
Qualifying for the Worlds Championship simply translates to qualifying for the World Cup during the World Cup years. Leave the Olympics for non-pro athletes which was the intention.

Eh, probably. Soccer doesn't seem to have that problem. Their fans get a lot more jazzed for the World Cup than the Olympics.

It’s cool and all, but the players cared about the Canada Cup, and I have strong recollections of them caring about the 1996 World Cup.
If they did it every four years, it would take on more significance.
And change that stupid trophy. It looks like a vase.

I think what was special about the 1996 World Cup is that we hadn't seen a best-on-best international hockey tournament for quite a while, probably since the old Canada Cup days. No one cared about the Olympics until 1998 which was the first time the NHL players went.

I enjoyed the Canada Cups when it changed to World Cup of Hockey it just got stupid. The tournament used to be legit years ago, now its just a gimmick as bad as the All-star game.

The World Cup easily can become legit again, and be consider the worth of Olympic gold when NHL players were going to it. But fans aren't gonna take it seriously if the NHL/IIHF doesn't. They have to make it consistent, and make assurances that fans can expect this tournament every four years. Then it'll be something that builds anticipations, and excitement. Give it a generation, and people will forget that the NHL even participated in the Olympics if they never go back again.
I also think that it would be cool to have a Canada Cup type series in the two years between the event. The suggestion of the championship country versus Team World sounds intriguing. But I think matchup quality, and player roster allocation can become a bit messy. Perhaps keep it more simple by doing Team North America vs. Team World. It's what they did for the All-Star games many years back.
