You still hitting the Bow weekday evenings? We should arrange a fish. Found this guy sipping caddis on a quick Friday night fish. Caddis hatch was unreal down at Police.

So, I haven't been fishing since I was a kid like 25 years ago. I'm not around Calgary so not looking for advice on where to fish, but was curious if anyone had a good resource for a good starter set of gear. Probably looking to start with trout or salmon - Oregon has plenty of rivers and lakes for both, but kind of clueless on what to buy to start out. Thanks.

Well if you want fly fishing gear you could check my post in the Power Ring or our website at www.secretcreekflyfishing.com and we have basically everything there. Depending on when you want it, I might even hand deliver it if you're around Portland!

Caught this 42" sonofabitch today. 20+ Lbs.
It was like trying to stop a freight train.

Spoiler!

Was that on the bow? I'm really starting to think I should finally submit to it. Spent the last four days at Ghost Lake, Barrier Lake, Ghrotto Pond and all I've managed to pull is a 6 inch brown trout. Love using my new inflateable kayak, but getting sick of getting killed out there! Trying everything from spinners, spools, willow leafs with my spinning rod and tons of different flies on the fly rod

That was on Otisco Lake nearby my home. There's public access on a causeway near the South end of it... about 1000 yards of shore access. I get out there every chance I get.

The Bow is tough to fish I think. I still go every now and again, but its a big river and really easiest with a boat. Don't get me wrong, you can land some nice fish there and its likely a lot better than still water, but its just tough to fish it I think.

Just wondering if there is a lake near Calgary that has a beach for the little ones and good fishing. Went to Chain Lakes a few years ago with the kids but there were no fish. Not sure if the screaming kids had anything to do with the no fish though.

I was out last night and caught a beautiful Cutty and last week some nice Bulls. (Posting pictures here is a bit of a chore!) The water is super low though and then tonight I saw this advisory : http://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI...4E1DCB73E15B73

Take some precautions to help protect our fishery!

A Shakespeare Tiger spinning rod and reel combo is about $18 US at the Wal-Mart. Damn decent rod, and the reel will handle the workload well. For decent casting ability, 8-12 lb mono on it.
For $18, it's practically disposable.

Middle range: Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye

http://www.fenwickfishing.com/fenwic...g/1363824.html

I have this rod in Medium Light for Walleye its great, its meant for jigging mainly but I use it to troll as well. Great sensitivity. Should be able to get it on sale for ~ $100 at Bass Pro if you watch for it.

If you want to take a step up you can look at some other rods in their line, Fenwick makes great stuff, or jump right to a St. Croix one piece. They are amazing, but $$$.

I'll look into both. Not sure I need to spent over $100 for a rod and reel combo. I mainly go catfishing, and have a good rod for that.

Just need something for jigging.

I have caught hundreds of walleye on a 25 year old rod/reel combo I bought for $15 from Canadian Tire.
