I assume we Monahan would go ahead of most of these guys? I'm not sure where to set my expectations this year. It should would be nice if we could get another Monahan type guy out of this draft.
Most yes. I think if Monahan was in this year's draft and we didn't have his success in the NHL to use, Reinhart still goes ahead of him. One the flipside, if Reinhart was in the last draft, I think he goes 5 ahead of Lindholm too and I'm a crazy Lindholm groupie as most know. I don't know about Ekblad, but a kid that big dominating scares me a bit since the size advantage is immediately gone at the next level ... plus the highly picked D stigma. Everyone is saying he's not on Jones' level, so I'd assume Monahan would go before him too.
Reinhart Monahan would be an amazing one two punch for us for a decade. It's too bad we won't have a shot at him.

Honka is a small offensive-minded blueliner who skates very well with strong lateral movements and agility. He's extremely elusive and hard to contain or catch. He possesses good recovery speed and quick on the transition from defense to offense.
Small defender who plays much bigger than his size. Fearless, and will engage anyone to get control of the puck. Is not a flashy up-ice guy, as he plays a solid all-around game with a careful approach to his defensive responsibilities first. Reads the ice well and passes well. Good in tarnsition. Moves well laterally, and is able to close because of his feet.
Martin is a smooth skating offensive minded blueliner who has good hands and likes to carry the puck himself. He shows good overall mobility, sees the ice well and makes good passes and plays well under pressure.
At 6’2″ already this 17-year-old has ideal NHL size. He is a solid two-way player, who does good work in both ends of the ice. He is a very good skater with speed in both directions and has the pivots and edgework necessary to be extremely mobile at the back-end. He makes strong passes on the breakout and on the power play, and has a decent point shot. Defensively, he’s a smart player who is good positionally and works hard in battles along the boards and in front of the net.
Glover is an impressive two-way defenseman who has good overall mobility. He's always aware in all three zones and defends with a physical edge, using his frame to separate pucks and size to clear the crease. He moves the puck well and has a good outlet pass.
Glover is a solid two-way defence prospect. He has good size and plays the defensive game with a physical edge. He is willing to throw the body, and to battle in his own end of the ice. He’s extremely smart as he reads the play well anticipating passes and causing turnovers, and always making the smart play with the puck on his stick. There is offensive potential, as he is a very good passer, able to make a good outlet pass, and uses great vision and creativity to really quarterback the play from the blueline. He has a good wrist shot and good release, and uses it to make sure he gets his shot on net and create rebound and tip in opportunities for teammates. He doesn’t have a huge slapshot though, not at this point.
DeAngelo is a smooth skating, offense-generating defenseman who has some very quick feet. He's slippery and very creative with the puck. His offensive awareness is incredible but is easily out-muscled in his own end and needs to work on his positioning.
Jacobs is a big defenceman who has put up 8 points in 14 games for the Indiana Ice in the USHL. He showing added offence this year after a solid rookie year where he showed a good defensive game for a 16-year-old. He is a very good skater, with a fluid stride, good top end speed, and explosive acceleration. He uses his size effectively exploding into big hits and battling hard along the boards and in front of the net, as well as being a willing shot blocker. He does need to work on his positioning, as well as a habit for giveaways, but he is young and raw with excellent potential to grow past those issues.
A promising two way defender with size and presence. Already displays pro-like decisions and coolness. Has a long reach, and is already functionally strong. Can be the first man due to his smooth powerful quickness and puck carrying abilities. Can really let the puck go. The bonsus is he is difficult to go around on dee, and is a punishing checker whose balance lets him stay in the play after a devastating hit. Much to like about him. Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge.
Middledon is a big-bodied, two-way defender that has strong mobility and a willingness to jump into the play. He makes heady passes and shows good vision and on-ice smarts. He isn't afraid to add a physical tone to the game, either.
Acquired from Owen Sound at the trade deadline last year, the 67s hope Middleton will become part of their core going forward. So far so good as he’s taking top four minutes as a 17-year-old. At 6’4″ Middleton has the ideal size that NHL teams are looking and will catch many scouts eyes this season. He is also tough, throwing hits, playing mean and clearing the front of the net, and being aggressive in the corners. He is a decent skater, with good edgework and agility, making him an agile big man on the blue line. He didn’t show much offence as a rookie, but did show decent defensive ability. This year he’s put up 7 points in 23 games, showing a bit of development in this aspect, but its his defensive game that gets him noticed on a rebuilding Ottawa club.
Dougherty is an intelligent defenseman who tries to blend strong positioning while trying to inflict a physical dimension on his opponent. He isn't the fleetest of foot, but does get where he needs to go. He also makes a strong first pass and has solid offensive instincts.
Excellent long term defensive prospect with a long frame, light skates, and puck moving skills. Not fancy, makes that first pass, and is poised and confident in his own end. Had upside as a PP guy, with a developing strong point shot and strong wrister.Rangy two-way defender who can carry and move the puck up ice and also provide some mustard and jam as a defender. An effortless skater with great mobility acceleration and elusiveness. Reads the sheet and passes extremely well. Can let loose an excellent shot on the move, put it on the tape, or skate it it in. His natural balance and feet let him close well and body check with power. Was named to the USA Developmental team playing in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. A developing prospect who is rising up the boards.
Though he has skating issues, the rest of Vanier's package is very entertaining. The hulking defenseman isn't shy to throw the body and picks his spots well. With his frame, he also has a booming shot that is highly effective on the power play.
Huge defender who is starting to develop edge, as he improves his all-around game and feet. must make big strides in terms of stop/starts, and lateral movement if he is to to be given consideration if he wants his name called.

How good is Ekblad ? Good enough to overpay for the pick?
Maybe this tweet will answer your question:
Corey Pronman @coreypronman 1m
Jones, Ekblad, Murray, Larsson RT @9Sullivan: @coreypronman can you rank Larsson, Murray, Jones and Ekblad in their individual draft years?
Reinhart Monahan would be an amazing one two punch for us for a decade. It's too bad we won't have a shot at him.
Well, I guess we could still win the lottery, so never lose hope (One more loss last year, and it's us picking up McKinnon). While I don't see out sucking Buffalo, but the other teams still have a reasonable shot at beating us.
Still like Bennett over all other forwards, told he's been playing with an injury(groin or something) and still plays with an edge and has 45pts in 31 games...but this Dal Colle is climbing fast.

Brayden point........plays for a crappy team always against the other teams top guys....although he is a calgary guy, so the flames drafting him would likely not be good for him

A good question to ask is why they converted him to LW. Anyone know?
From what I've read he was switched to wing last year because he was behind Scott Laughton and Boone Jenner in the center spot, but they wanted him in the top-6. This season Jenner is gone, but Laughton came back from Philly, although even before that he was playing wing with John Sterk as his center. It looks like the coaches really think his game is better suited for the wing, and with the success he's having it's hard to argue.

Plays like a mix of eberle and Gallagher, would definitely take him with our 2nd

15 Ritchie, Nicholas F 12/5/1995 L 6.02.25 231 Peterborough OHL
Seeing Ritchie this low scares me off a bit. Seems to slide in and out of the top ten.
Glad with Burke that we are unlikely to see another Nylander in a Flames jersey. I could see Perlini and McCann continue to climb in rankings.
we lack in size on the wings with our current prospects.
Klimchuk, Elson, Gaudreau & Sven are indeed below 6', and adding some size is a good idea. Were not totally lacking in decent-sized wingers, though:
Ferland - 6'2
Poirier - 6'1
Hanowski - 6'2
Agostino - 6'1
Gordon - 6'1
Harrison - 6'3
Nemisz - 6'3 (albeit unlikely to make an impact)
Plus Jooris & Reinhart are 6'1, and may be destined for the wing.
I just hope Burke or the new GM draft for speed, skill and hockey sense in addition to size. Big is only one factor among several to consider.
Obviously we all want an iginla or a getzlaf or a Lucic or a perry.... Guys with Size, skill, grit, speed, etc... But this draft doesn't look to have a lot of that in it. Hopefully there are some sleeper picks that can turn into those kind of difference makers.
Would be amazing if the flames could get Ekblad and Vanier. That would help our D situation a lot!
Vanier is a very interesting prospect.
He could be the complete package d man that everyone covets. He is putting up nearly a point a game (4th on his team in scoring). He has size, is tough and is willing to fight.
Skating being the major concern with him, but that is fixable if the kid is committed and willing to work on it.
If he keeps his play up he may be challenging for a top 15 pick overall by June.

just realized that if the draft were today, the sabres would be heavy favourites to be picking #1 and #2.... Nice way to continue their rebuild by getting both Reinhart+Ekblad!

You'd have to think that if Buffalo got Ekblad they would have the largest D-core ever assembled by a large margin!
