Travel Agents/Mayan Riviera

I am trying to book a 7 day vacation to an all-inclusive with my wife to the Mayan Riviera in early March and am having a difficult time settling on a resort and agent.

Has anyone been down there?

We're looking for a semi-private, adult oriented (i.e. no faimiles with young kids running around), all inclusive with a nice pool OR beach and good food.

We like the area and what it has to offer, but there are so many options for resorts and we don't want to get hosed.

Any other tips/advice would be appreciated!

couple of questions...
yuo said early march..march 4?
and I would recommend 4* or better if you are not an experienced travellor.
if you are, then you can get away with 3* but I would be hesitant in selling it to you.

a personal favourite is the SANDOS SELECT CLUB, its a 5* resort, but it does allow families. however the price is great for under $1500.00 per person taxes included.

Booked it through Escapes.ca about a week ago and saved a ton.

Adults only with no reservations required for dinner is what caught our eye about this place. It's not in Cancun or Playa Del Carmen so if you want alot of night life you probably wouldn't like it.

well its starting to come up in price now as well, however having said that, its still not as hot of a destination place as mexico, but its getting there.
mexico has become very commercialized, sadly, I believe DR will eventually follow suit.

We were looking at Secrets Capri, Xpu-ha palace, and maybe the Bahia Principe Coba. So.. 4*+

I'd like to go to a resort that has a nice spa and complimentary honeymoon package. Golf is a plus, but not a necessity, but I would like to go tour some of the ruins/local attractions.

It looks like there are a lot of kids in the pictures of Sandos Select, which is something we'd like to avoid for this trip.

Also, I'd prefer a resort that has low instances of theft and people hassling you about timeshares.

It looks like I am leaning towards the Xpu-ha palace based on the quality and price. Secrets would be great if I could get it closer to $2000/person.

That was sort of one of the reasons I think I enjoyed PV more than Cancun. We stayed just outside of PV and it was a lot more relaxed than Cancun.

yup, I agree with you on that one.
I last stayed in Cancun, wow, talk about commericalized.
PV, Vallarta Nayarit is good that way too.

Stayed at the Copacabana about 2 years ago. It's smaller than the others along the beach in the Maya but it was really nice. The food was good, not great, but the beach was excellent. There seem to be a lot of Italians there so all the anouncements are in English, Spanish, Italian and French. Kinda weird.

It's a couple doors down to the place where those Torontonians were stabbed but it's also a 10 minute collectivo ride to Playa Del Carmen.

Just my opinion, but I've been "lead into temptation" on a few occasions by booking trips on-line and while they may "on the surface" seem to be saving you a "buck or hundred", in my experience they're not all they're cracked up to be and I've had a few TERRIBLE experiences once at my destination with the on-line service not providing me with ALL the necessary information I've needed or by having to pay on top of what I've paid the on-line company.

While some may find it less of a hassle to book on-line, personally I will NEVER do so again. There's nothing like dealing with a REAL HUMAN BEING who knows EXACTLY what they're talking about.

And for the record, I have used SampleOO's agency not only for my own travel since I've known him, but have recommended him to many friends and family members who would give him NOTHING but a glowing review.

In this humble yet experienced traveller's opinion, saving a few bucks doesn't hold ANYTHING to having customer service that is bar none.

I'm the same way. I can sacrifice a few bucks if the service is great. "You get what you pay for" is an adage that is founded in truth, for sure.

Where did you end up going, and what were some of the pitfalls you wish you could have avoided?

how old is your son,
chances are you are better off booking as a double in a room than you paying a single and then your son coming in.
that can tend to be more expensive than booking just a double room.
