And, let's keep this thread just for updates for now.
To discuss the issues or the implications; let's use the other thread. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=42070
Good call, Nehkara.
Edit- I'm going to sticky this for today at least; as it affects almost all of us in some way.

Looks like the vote was about 1340-250 in favour of a strike. More coming up on Global.

Well 83.4% is lower than thought, no? And they're going to meet first before they give their 72 hours notice.

Union boss says they'll meet before giving strike notice. So I would say we're safe for Monday morning at the least.

Apparently around or just over 50% came out to vote and a city spokesman uses that number to claim that only about 58% of the union wanted a strike. I guess it's literally true but take it for what it's worth.

You have to wonder why the other 50 odd percent didn't show up to vote. My guess is those members felt a 'yes' vote would be a slam dunk. Anyhow, let the spin process begin.

Transit Workers Vote To Strike
May, 03 2007 - 10:40 PM
CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Transit workers have voted 84.3 percent in favour of strike action.
Almost sixteen hundred workers cast ballots out of nearly twenty five hundred.
The executive will meet with its members next week to discuss their options.
They include a full scale strike or rotating job action.

I heard on some newsbreak or something that the city will lock them out before they go on strike.
I love lockouts.

I was listening to CBC this morning and they were saying that the two sides are apart on some of the community shuttle driver issues, and that they can't see the city not caving into demands about that issue if a notice to strike is issued.

They were discussing the lockout on TV. Basically the same guidelines as the union; they have to give 72 hours notice.
This doesn't surprise me. I can't see the city letting the workers do some sort of rotating job action.

If they were very far apart on major issues like wages for all drivers, then I could see this getting real ugly.
But the fact that there are only minor obstacles to getting a deal done, I can't see the City allowing any type of transit disruption to happen, especially with an election coming up soon.

I saw the guy from the city talking about how they can't allow the "rotating" thing or any action that would disrupt any service so they'll shut the whole thing down before they let it happen.
Would the union be compelled to give 72 hours notice before doing something like abandoning certain routes on a rotating basis, or is the 72 hours a blanket statement saying "in 72 hours we can do what we want" or would they have to specify what will happen like "routes 419, 21, 37 and 256 will not be running in 72 hours"?
I don't like the "game of chicken" (as they put it on CBC) going on here. If the union wants to do some rotating crap then that sucks, but the city shouldn't lock them out. I'd rather transit was running 75% of the time instead of 0% of the time.

OK guys, I know we slowly moved to it, but let's keep this about the strike vote, and the service disruptions that may or may not happen. The point of this thread is for us to have a brief thread to look into to see how this will affect us getting into work, etc.
As mentioned we have another thread to debate the issues. That one can get as long as needed.
I'm going to move some of the posts from this thread into the other one.

From the Calgary Transit site:
"Daily Service Adjustments
Service adjustments are being made on a daily basis. Schedule adjustments will be made available by 8 p.m. for the next morning and 1 p.m. for the afternoon peak period and evening service.
Schools service will be updated each day at 1 p.m. for afternoon buses and 4 p.m. for buses the next morning.
To access up-to-date information, customers can contact Teleride (974-4000), the web site (Schedules link) or our Call Centre at 262-1000"

The online schedules and the teleride schedules are quite different right now.
The teleride says there will be fewer buses than usual -- not explicity, but it says that my route will have a half hour gap between buses during the peak time tomorrow morning (7-8am). CT.com claims the normal 15 minute gap.
I live in a pretty old suburb in SE Calgary and a full-size (and completely empty) bus just drove by. Normally this would have been a shuttle bus so something is a little wonky.

Negotiators with the city and transit union met for several hours on Wednesday (May 9). They've agreed to talk again Friday.
