Hey there. Going to New York in November, and was just wanted to know what should I see while in town? Besides the usual stuff.. something that you wouldn't know about unless you've been there or know somewhere from there (a great pizza joint, a great hole in the wall place that isn't a touristy kinda place).

Thanks for the input! I'll be there for 8 days so time isn't a big deal

Attend the taping of the letterman show which is free.
If you are a geek, check out the B&H store.
If you are a sports fan, the NFL, NHL and NBA are playing in November.

I LOVE NY. Wish I can get a well paying job and live that. But it's mostly just a pipe dream.

Grimaldi's pizza under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side.

Halal cart at 53rd and 6th. Between 7 pm and 4 am only. There are quite a few carts, go to the one with the line. Other ones will claim to be the same but they are not. Combo plate. Beware the spicy sauce, seriously. This one's a bit of a tourist place but it is amazing and worth it. Again, beware the spicy sauce.

View from the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Plaza) is better than the Empire State building. They should have the Christmas tree up and ice skating in Rockefeller Square by November. You can rent skates.

Trip to Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty is only worth it if you actually care to see Ellis Island. Otherwise the Staten Island Ferry is free and it goes right by Lady Liberty. Staten Island is pretty cool, tons of huge multi-million dollar homes to gawk at and wish you had the money.

Museum of Modern Art was pretty cool.

Food and shopping are just ridiculous. I recommend browsing through the threads at egullet and chowhound and finding food that suits your tastes and price range. New York literally has EVERYTHING you can think of. It is the food mecca of the world. You can spend anywhere from $20 to $500 a day and find food that will blow your mind.

Houston Street has some really cool jazz and blues clubs that you can hit up and listen to some awesome live music. On weekends a lot of them are open till 4 am or something ridiculous.

The National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Countless Broadway shows. The Book of Mormon is really hot right now. There's something for everyone.

Honestly, they don't call it the Capital of the World for nothing. Give us some insight into things you like to do or what you're interested in, and you'll be able to find countless activities. Where are you staying? I find the easiest way to do New York is pick a neighborhood and spend a couple days exploring it. Little Italy is pretty sweet, I've got the name of this restaurant on the tip of my tongue that is on Waverley but can't recall, I'll update when I figure it out.

Right now you say you have 8 days so time is not an issue. Trust me on the 7th day you're going to wish you had 8 more.

I'll be staying in Chelsea, across the street from MSG.

One of the things I want to have happen more than anything is to see Louis CK perform on a random night at Carolines by chance. I'd literally die of happiness. The jazz and blues clubs you mentioned sound awesome, I dont plan on sleeping much while I'm there so that kind of thing sounds awesome.

And of course I plan on seeing 3 hockey games while I'm in town lol. Oh and my friend who's going loves country but I dont think New York is Nashville haha

I suggest going to a bookstore in New York and looking up what literally means. Also, did you actually laugh out loud?

Try and go to The Daily Show if they are taping while you are there.

Aside from all of the above, go for a run in Central Park. Seriously.

Go up to Harlem and wander around.

Yeah . . . . . some shows on Broadway. Dress up a bit. We had a car pick us up on a corner in Times Square after seeing The Producers. Amid the throngs, the car magically appeared as it was supposed to and I shuffled the two beautiful ladies I was with into the thing and we were off . . . . the only thing missing was my top hat and cane.

Saw Lyle Lovett, his Large Band and the Harlem Gospel Choir at Carnegie Hall, caught some expensive vittles after and walked back to the hotel. A most awesome evening.

That was all sandwiched around a cruise out of New York, down to Florida and the Bahamas and back to New York . . . . so leaving New York harbour on a cruise ship is also awesome!!

We were also there in November, a very nice time to go as its cooler but without the crowds. Walked right up to the elevator for the Empire State Building. Very nice vacation and New York is indeed a great, great place to visit.

Other than that, some ideas in no particular order:

- Yankees game
- Broadway show (even if you're not "in-to-theatre", there's bound to be something you'd enjoy)
- Letterman
- National History Museum
- The Met
- Walk across Brooklyn bridge
- Walk in central park
- Rent a rowboat in central park
- Check out some cool architecture in the Financial District
- Shop in SOHO
- Pub/club scene in the East Village
- Times Square
- Statue of Liberty (recommend if you just want to say you saw it, take the free ferry not a tour boat)
- Ellis Island if you're into ancestry/history

Well I would head up to Brooklyn, then maybe down to Tribeca...Maybe that McDonalds right there on Broadway..

I would for sure get court seat for Knicks and Nets, and I would give some high fives...You'll be so close you can trip the referee..

Hmm what else? There is so much to do there...New York is a concrete jungle where dreams are made, there is really nothing you can't do. Let's hear it for New York!

I'm jealous, I really want to go to New York in late November or December some year to see the city all dressed up for the holidays. If you are going to a show try (I think it's impossible) to get tickets for The Book of Mormon by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

FYI - when I was in NY in April, this show was sold-out until July. So check ahead for tickets for this one if it's what you'd like to see... or at least have a plan B or C.

If you're not motivated to see one certain Broadway show, you can stop by the TKTS booth at Times Square, for discount tickets. They sell them on the day of the show at~40% off.

Be prepared to stand in line for a while (couple hours) tho... strongly recommend getting there before they open. Bring a book :P

Among the things already mentioned, one of the highlights for me was taking a helicopter tour of Manhattan.

We each bought a 7 Day New York Pass when we went and saved a lot of money on attractions. It also came with a 7 day subway pass too. If you're going to be doing tons of stuff, it might be something to look into. Or at least it might give you ideas on things you didn't know were there. Like taking a night cruise down the Hudson River, etc.
