As always Pete the Plumber is my go to. Had my old tank removed, new one installed and a few misc pipes cut/capped for around $800 all in.

shut off the water supply and gas supply, drain, disconnect, remove.
installation is opposite of removal.

I have no plumbing advice to offer, but when it comes time to take the old one to the dump- take it to Calgary Metals instead. At the dump you will pay $15 to drop it off, whereas Calgary metals will pay you for it. I ended up getting $12 for my old tank; so a $27 difference between the two options.

Pete the Plumber wasn't a bad experience, but I found them to be much more Bruce Banner than Incredible Hulk.

Still, for $800 all in its hard to argue and you'll get what you need.

Fair warning though - no Drill Crew members accompany the plumber....just sayin'

While the OP found a plumber, I'll post here in case someone else digs up this thread looking for a plumber.

Had a terrific experience with Silcraft Plumbing. Found them via a referral at beyond.ca. They were a father-son team. Appreciated that I talked to them, not a reception service, when I called their number. Extremely friendly, knew their stuff, made room in their schedule to fit me in (had a backed up kitchen sink - the other plumbers I called could only book 4-5 days later), then gave me some helpful tips to prevent the incident from happening again. Price was on par or below the other plumbers I called too. I'd say I found my plumber, maybe you will too.
