My New Guitar!
I'm the proud poppa of a new Sierra Alpine acoustic guitar ($349). I've been playing my first guitar for over 20 years, so it was time to get a nicer guitar, and it is much easier to play.
http://www.sierraguitars.net/guitars.cfm?ModelID=12
The Alpine series embodies beauty and adventure discovered among the highest mountain ranges. Perfectly stylized with a Venetian cutaway, this acoustic-electric dreadnought creates a seamless balance of volume and clarity, enhanced by Barcus-Berry electronics. The Alpine reflects the fortitude of the Sierras with its unique 12th fret mountain range design.
Thanks to the good folks at Rock Shop:

You don't have to spend a fortune these days for a good acoustic guitar.

Nice! I paid like $700 for my Simon & Patrick... but I have a special fondness of S&P. No rhyme or reason...maybe 'cause they're Canadian made. For my next purchase, I may buy a banjo just for the sake of trying it. LOL... an Asian playing a banjo...go figure

I found a good deal for an epiphone dot, and going to pick it up tomorrow. Wondering if anyone here has experience with them, and what they found? I'm already prepared to change the pick-ups on it.

I bought a Taylor a few years ago as an impulse buy. I rarely even touch it... in fact I never touch it. I play my first guitar that is beat up beyond recognition. It has dents and chips in places it shouldn't have. It's great though, lets me leave it out and have no fear of it breaking. No need to always stick it in the case so it doesn't get damaged.
I agree, no need to spend over $1000 (I was stupid) on a guitar. Unless you're a pro.

Very nice! I'm gonna hijack the thread with a quick question...
I have the summer off and I want to get better at the guitar. I can play chords and basic tabs np but wanted to pick up a nice electric that will last me and that I can grow into. Suggestions? I don't want to go overboard on pricing but am willing to pay $1000+
Heading over to Axe guitars over the weekend but seeing as I just know how to play a bit and don't know much about brands etc., I don't wanna get taken by the sales rep.
Thx CP!

$1000 is actually a huge budget for a first electric guitar. It depends on what style you prefer as generally many players either go for a Strat or Les Paul Style and most guitars you'll find in a store are derivatives of those. You can opt for something different as well.
What are you interested in in a guitar? Don't look for brands, look for features that fit you as a player a look that you like as well. You'll want a guitar that has the kind of tone you want, has the neck radius for your style of play, etc.
I really love the guitar, sadly I have no musical friends and I often ended up going to Axe Music and Long & McQuade by myself. I would have never considered actually buying a guitar from those places though because they always seemed overpriced to me.
Anyway let me know what you are looking for and maybe I can come up with some suggestions.

From my experience the sales rep won't take you, I find a lot of them are very knowledgeable and they'll help you out a lot.
I wouldn't spend $1000+ if I were you, you can get a pretty good electric for $500-700.
As for brands, a lot of them are good, it is all about preference and everyone has their own. I like ESP's but Gibson, Fender, Dean, Jackson, Ibanez, they're all good brands.

Or even less. I've got a $1700 strat and I can't say I am anymore fond of it than an $80 ebay guitar I bought from the UK. $300-$500 is actually a good range as well. You can also build your own if you are into that sort of thing.

PRS SE series FTW. PRS make the nicest electric guitars I have ever laid my hands on, and the SE series make it possible to own one without taking out a second mortgage. Yes, they're made in Korea instead of the US, but they are still amazing guitars.

Big name brands are way overpriced though. Les Paul's are horrifically expensive, and the quality isn't much better than an Agile version, at literally one quarter the price.
Here's what I mean: http://www.rondomusic.com/coolcatbkbigsby.html
That guitar is $550. Comparable name brands are probably triple the price at least, and you won't have any quality issue.
That said, I really like the Gibson ES-335. Also, Gretsch guitars are sweet.
I personally have a Danelectro U2 reissue that a friend's dad bought for him in a pawn shop in the US that I bought off of him. I love that guitar. Three cheers for two pieces of thin plywood, some masonite and lipstick pickups. Plays like a dream!

Yup. The only thing wrong with it is that the electronics don't work, and a replacement unit is hard to find because it's not used in my edition of the guitar anymore.
Not that I really care, I don't plug it in.
Here's a picture of my guitars on the wall:

If you decide to go the Fender route, then I'd suggest getting a 'Made In Mexico' one over their USA counterparts. I own at Strat and a Tele and I think they're 'nearly' as good as the American made ones but for much less.
I agree that you can get a good guitar for around $500. I also agree with Redliner in that the PRS SEs are great guitars for the money.
I'd say try playing lots and lots and go with what feels good.
