I don't want Billy Bob and a pick up, a commercial moving company that you've used in the past that was relatively cheap and were efficient.

Last time we moved we had to pay an arm and a leg... Can't remember which company it was however.

any input would be appreciated.

Don't exist, you pay for quality, and you pay insane amounts it seems. If you want your stuff in one piece just pay a few hundred more, plus it often times will save you hours upon hours of time.

We used these guys last time we moved and were quite happy with them, though I don't think they were the cheapest out there. These guys had a nice addon that we could go pickup all the boxes we needed for free, and just had to return them eventually (or you could buy them as well).

We tried to use a cheaper place to move my parents and I was very unhappy with them; the two guys they sent over were very slow because one was sick and the other was injured! The were late, then they were loading for almost four hours before the company finally sent over another couple of guys to help. By the time they finished unloading it was almost midnight! Fortunately they only charged me for what they had originally estimated. I think that one was Two Men and a small truck or something like that (not the two men and big heart guys).

Yes, I (unfortunately) agree with this one. I can't remember - might have been 2 small guys with big hearts I think, though. My sister and b/f hired them to move their stuff. The b/f has a big kick ass TV; they came, saw it and proclaimed that "this looks too hard to do/lift".

Finally convinced them that, umm, that was their job. They took it, and then when they got to the new place, they took the tv out. And then had a look at where it had to go - this involved some stairs, but nothing crazy. they then proclaimed that "there's no way we are doing that...they don't #Q%@$# pay us enough to move that...not something like that...screw it".

They then proceeded to leave the TV sitting, out on the back yard. Not kidding oyu.

Anyways, my sister and her b/f phoned the better business bureau...turns out they have A TON of complaints against them - but if I remember correctly, nothing the better business bureau could do as they did not actually belong to it!

So long story short, I wouldn't really recommend renting from them....!

We used the 2 small guys with big hearts and I wasn't too impressed with their work ethic. Took them forever to move a small 2 room apartment, and they weren't cheap either.

Try either mini move(ers?) (very competitive rate) or Smooth Moves (a little expensive but good)

There is a company called Alberta Movers that will move your stuff for cheap but it's hard to say where it will end up. Probably not at your new house. My old man hired them to move some furniture to Calgary from Edmonton and the last thing the guy told him was "we think it's gone to Halifax".

We never saw the stuff again. Maybe the guy thought it was nicer than his own furniture so he put it in his own house.

Don't use Alberta Movers.

Ha - sorry, not to laugh at what actually happened, but that does sound kind of funny!

Anywho, why is it so hard for companies to move stuff? I mean, its not rocket science. Flip, my 7-year old niece could probably figure it out. But you hear oh so many horror stories about it, and it seems like such a simple concept...

Pick up from Point A, transport to Point B.

Done.

Evidently, its not that simple...

Your 7 year old niece is named Flip? That's interesting.

Anyways, what is the problem with moving yourself? Get a couple of buddies over, down a few brews, order a pizza and get it done in an afternoon. Hellacheap, and probably safer too, if you keep an eye on things.

Yeah I'd laugh too if it happened to someone else.

I'm kidding of course. It's funny that it allegedly ended up in Halifax. Talk about taking a wrong turn.

That company sucks. I want everyone to remember that. I tell random people on the street how bad they are. Still in the phonebook though so I guess my efforts have been in vain.

Smart ass No she's not named Flip. I like that word, though...flip. Ok, maybe not.

I'll second the buddies and beer/pizza route. Good times.

Actually, while we are kind of on this topic, my g/f and I are moving to Halifax. Any ideas on the best way to do it? Sadly beer bribery via the friends doesn't work for this one! The horror, I know...

Anywho, the best we have found so far, actually, is FedEx and Canada Post. Go figure, hey.

***Ha - ok this is really lame...BUT...your wrong...you could say my niece was called "Flip" if I had put 2 commas in ... i.e. Flip, my 7 year old niece, could...

BUt....with only one comma, that does not revert to the name of the child.

Man, am I a nerd or what.

I would just rent a big panel van and bribe my friends with pizza and beer. It always seems to work well for me.

(You might want to try coolers though )

Sell as much stuff as you can on Cpbay and go from there would actually be my suggestion... but you could just use Alberta movers and say you want to go to Edmonton and hope for the best.

Don't and I mean don't do U-Haul. Although I have heard some allright things about the trucks at Budget.

Yah, thanks. We are selling almost everything....going skin and bones if you will.

Ha yah re: U-Haul.

UGH BUDGET. I hate them; nothing ever but trouble from them (and this is something just as simple as renting a car).

For e.g. -- phoned 5 times for a one-way rental. We were told ALL 5 times that we had to pick it up at the local airport. Go to the airport and then get REEMED out b/c tjhey "don't rent to locals at the airport". I mean REEMED OUT. There was also something else the same time that they did that.

Ugh. Sorry, getting a bit off topic here...

I would also check how much it costs for rail transport, as I would imagine that would be significantly less than CanadaPost or FedEx.

thanks - thats a good idea!

fedex is not bad...we did a random assortment of package sizes and weights...included tv...computer monitor....we could get 10 boxes delivered from here to halifax for only 300 bucks or so. and that also included insurance on everything...

Depends what you call cheap I guess. The cheapest you will get from a reputable outfit is $99.00 hr for 3 men, or $80 - $85.00 for 2. Understand, you will pay from the time they leave their warehouse, till the time they get back. Also, try and haggle the rate. They will flex a little, although those are decnt rates. End of the month, you will likely pay more.

I recommend this co. - www.williamsmoving.com

Honestly, its one of those cheesy names like AAAA1 Dave's moving.

Fully certified, BBB and all that.

But Dave knows what he's doing. What took a 7 hour job to get us in and out, at more expensive rates with 2 guys 3 years ago, took Dave and one guy 4 hours to do the same (with us having more stuff), at more then half the cost.

Plus courteous, and not one mark on the wall, very skilled at moving things up and down stairs. No extra hidden fees for mvoing the big screen (some movers want an extra 100$ to do that). No supplies or extra driving time.

Highly recommended, and will use them and refer them as many times as I can (which is rare for me to bother to do).

Shocked when he provided the bill and it was around $300.
