Default Moving Companies?

We're moving and I'm looking for a professional moving company. I've hired companies before but have had terrible service (broken dresser legs, inaccurate quotes, late arrival, muddy boots)
Is there someone that you suggest who is fairly priced and take their business seriously?
thanks in advance...

I've had good experience with Atlas/AMJ Campbell twice -- timely, courteous, and within 10% of their quote (which is based on the actual shipped weight). However, there were a couple minor damage issues both times I used them -- however, I did the packing myself so it could have been my fault.

The last few times I've moved, I've actually hired some of the smaller guys in town (Big Daddy Movers, Cheap Charlie's etc) and been absolutely thrilled with their service. There were no damages, they didn't slack and their rates were excellent. I'd recommend checking them out if nothing else, just because they don't have a name doesn't mean they aren't any good.

I've used Two Amigos for smaller local moves and they have always been very good - prompt, courteous, careful.

From my experience, service doesn't depend too much on the company but the driver. We used North American for two cross continent moves. The first move went incredibly well and the driver was incredible. He couldn't get into our destination apartment parking lot and had to literally park two and a half blocks. Hauled it all up no problem, no questions asked...we took him out for a meal and beer as it was above and beyond what he needed to do.

For the second move the driver refused to unload our stuff because he couldn't get into the parking lot fully. He wanted to hire a small shuttle to do it even though if you measured it the entrance to the complex was well within the unload distance. The company was useless as for any company it is up to the drivers discretion to unload or not.

In reality the guy simply wanted money under the table ("it will cost $500 to hire a shuttle but if you give me $300 cash I'll unload it"). He tried to hold our stuff hostage...perhaps because we looked young. Unfortunately for him we aren't stupid or that young. He refused to unload, I refused to move from the front of his truck so he couldn't drive away and put our stuff in storage. Meanwhile my wife called the cops. Cops settled it very quickly when they told him to start unloading in 30 seconds or be arrested for theft.

I've only used a mover once, and it was a bad experience, so I can only recomment that you stay away from the company we used ... Two Little Men With Big Hearts. From some of the horror stories I've heard about movers, I think you're safest to go with one of the big name outfits, although even that's no guarantee you won't get a bad driver as ernie has pointed out.
