Default Moving Companies

Anyone have any good suggestions/experiences for a moving company?

Just a local move from Calgary to Okotoks.

Thanks

Ralph's moving did a good job for us at a reasonable price. I would recommend them.

My two bits:

DO NOT
use Two Small Men With Big Hearts. Ever. For anything. In fact, flip them the bird if you ever see them driving around town.

If possible, schedual a morning move because most times afternoon moves are not guarenteed.

AAAAafforable Dave's moving.
Small company (was only 2 trucks 2 years ago when we moved to out house). Cheesy name, but no frills, quality, friendly, inexpensive service.

Was completely impressed with the quality and speed of work...and, the inexpensive, no hidden costs of it all.

A few others around here have used them on my word, too.

Except when you schedule a morning move and explain to them you need to get on the road because your stop for the night is 12-13 hrs away and they ensure you they will be waiting at 8:30 and then when 9:30 comes along and they're not there so I had to find our phone and hook it up and he informs me that yes indeed they'll be over around 3 pm to load our stuff. That was with United Van Lines.

That's pretty much what happened to me with Two Small Men With Smaller Dicks. I called and asked to schedual for an afternoon move because my condo was just newly built and everyone was moving in and I was only alloted 3 hours from 3pm to 6pm to use the elevator to move in. I told the receptionist that about four times when I called to book and she said it wasn't a problem. Not once did she mention anything about afternoon moves not being guarenteed and always assured me that they would be there.

Then the day of the move shows up and Im waiting for the movers but they're an hour late so I call and I get patched through to some guy who totally sounds like some fatass forklift jockey who flagrantly doesn't give two ****s about me or my move and tells me afternoon moves aren't guartenteed and I was told that when I booked. I said I wasn't and that if I had been I wouldn't have bothered booking because I only had a 3 hour window to move in. He just called me a liar in a round-about way and asked if I still wanted the movers to come when they were finished with their current move. I said of course, then called all my friends and family to bail me out and did it all ourselves so the movers wasted their time and gas showing up to an empty storage facility.

****ers.

I used Williams for my move last year. They came to the condo to do the estimate, the movers were on time, the proper number of movers were scheduled, they took care in both the old and new residence, nothing was damaged. About what you'd hope for in a move.

We moved from Calgary to Cochrane a few years back. We used Two Men with Small Hearts to move us. They packed up our belongings in Oakridge and then headed up to Cochrane. Once we got there, we waited for almost 2 hours for the movers, and found out they went out and had lunch first. Then...they had the nerve to try and charge us for that time. Dont ever use them.

Ralph's moved me last year, and I thought they did a great job. I'd recommend them as well.

I guess im ignorant on this, but since this move is basically local why not just round up a gang of friends and rent a truck?

I had a good experience with AMJ Campbell, but they'll cost you more.
I would suggest NOT using Two Amigos. Had a really bad experience with them and have heard other horror stories about them as well.

That's what I've done in the past, but is the small amount of savings really worth it?

Do it yourself:
Cost to rent truck
Cost of mileage for rental truck
Cost of gas for rental truck and any other vehicles used
Cost of food and beer for helpers
Cost of my back

Private company:
Hourly cost - based on how long they work. No fancy system based on how many rooms or types of furniture etc etc.

So, in theory, it always looks like U-haul etc is cheaper, but I have my doubts and will test the private company waters for this move. It'll be nice to sit back and watch for once.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'll give some of them a call.

I had a bad experience with AMJ, and the inflated bill on top of it. Sounds like Ralph's is a good bet.

I used Two Amigos when I moved a few months ago. They did a great job. Came on time, worked hard, were pleasant and careful. Someone else I know referred them to me based on the same type of experience.

I used Dave's in August and was really unhappy with the quality of service. I asked for two guys and at the last minute he said they had three (which costs more per hour) and one of the guys they brought sat in the truck during the entire move. Another one of them was old and couldn't lift anything and the last was a really hard worker but smoked every half hour. So I basically paid them for one helper and a truck and had to do a bulk of the work by myself. The stuff they did bring into my new house scuffed the walls and damaged some of the furniture which they did nothing to rectify.

All in all it was a bad experience and I would not recommend them to anyone. Could have been a busy time or something for them but that was my experience.
