Default Renting a Moving Truck, Need advise

Well, my family and I are picking up and moving to Moose Jaw. The one detail that still needs to be worked out is how we are going to get there. I have decided that I'm not going to pay $4-5000 to get there with movers......instead I think I'll rent a UHAUL truck.

Does anyone have a good/bad experience doing this. I've been talking with a couple people and I've been getting a negative vibe about their trucks breaking down and not actually getting the truck (if any) when you go to pick it up.

Also, does anyone know of any other companies that offer pick up in one city and drop off in another one? I've tried Thrifties, Enterprise, Rent a Wreck, Budget but they don't offer what UHAUL does.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you are I am moving to Calgary though. I will probably go with u-haul in the end. I have used them before and wasn't too bad.

Well I talked with a girl today who rented a big truck and had the exhaust fall off and the drive shaft fall off all on the same trip. I'm a bit concerned hearing stories like that. However, If there are good experiences that people can share that would probably go a long way. I think in the end I don't really have much of a choice unless I hire someone

The last time I moved in May the uhaul truck I drove had less than 5000km on it. Most of the ones at the Blackfoot location seemed to be relatively new looking. It was about time they upgraded their fleet.

Well I rented the 26 foot truck last year with U-Haul and managed to make two trips between Sylvan Lake and St.Albert without it blowing up or anything. Calgary to Moose Jaw is pretty flat so you might be okay. Although check out Ryder, Budget etc... All of them have moving type vehichles available and all seem to have a better rep than U-Haul, and will be competitive with U-Haul price wise.

Thats good to know. Does every franchise have a differnet lineup/fleet?

Just keep in mind... that if you book something, it's not guarenteed apparently. What a nightmare just getting what you are looking for. Have a backup plan!

U-Haul story

There a lots of horror stories on the interweb about that particular company.

Google it up and you'll find some interesting stuff I'm sure.

Or a search on CP for "uhaul" comes up with all sorts of horror stories.

When my wife moved to Calgary, her truck broke down an hour outside of Brooks. She and her friend stayed the night in a strangers house before the truck was towed and fixed. A friend of her was also using U-Haul to move to BC. The truck caught fire while they were stopped for breakfast (all belongings destroyed - no compensation fron U-Haul).

I'll second the Ryder suggestion. They were great for me when I moved in July. Great service, and reliable trucks.
