I tried the one on 16 Ave NE once and wasn't all that impressed. (I don't think that particular location exists anymore but I believe there are others)

My favorite has always been El Sombrero on 17th ave. Amazing food and ussually they have a mariachi band playing, very nice.

Seconded.. Always had a good meal there. And when a Mexican takes you there.. you know it's good.

I have always liked Julio's as well. Although the servings there are too small.

There's a great place in the strip mall directly South of Big 4 Motors on Macleod trail. Don't know the name though

Salt and Pepper in Bownesia is pretty good, my girlfriend didn't like it though. I had the absolute best farts that night.

There are no good true mexican places in Calgary. There are some average tex-mex places. Julio's Barrio is not one of them. In fact, it's a total travesty.

I also like El Sombrero, but my favorite is Salt and Pepper,
They have 3 locations, Cochrane, Macleod Trail, and Cochrane.
Over the summer me and a buddy would ride our motorbikes out to Cochrane almost every Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. All you can eat Tacos for $10.
I highly recommend it.

True; our " mexican" restaurants are watered-down tex-mex joints, and tex-mex is watered-down mexican food itself.
Boca Loca has some authentic stuff; Salt & Pepper is not bad too (Macleod Tr. and Bowness). Renette at Boca Loca used to live in Guadalajara.
"Calgary suffers from a death of authentic Mexican restaurants; don't get me started on Julio's Barrio! Luckily there is Boca Loca. Most of the shop's space is devoted to Mexican foodstuffs that are hard to find elsewhere, but there are a few tables set for lunch.
Renette Kurz and her staff serve wonderful tamales, tostadas and burritos, as well as daily soups such as Pozole Rojo.
You can have a tasty lunch here for less than ten dollars, but don't leave without trying the Mexican coffee or hot chocolate. Both are spiced with soft Mexican cinnamon and are delectable." Great Cheap Eats, City Palate, Jan/Feb 2006 Issue, p. 14
I used to wash dishes at Chi-Chis in high school. You would not like it so much if you saw the kitchen and our "chefs".

I knew this thread couldn't exist without someone reminiscing about Chi-Chi's.

I haven't tried Boca (but I will definately give it a try soon).
My current favourite is El Sombraro. Their "Combinacion Mexicana" is one of the great pants-loosening eats in the city.
Friends don't let friends eat at Julios Bario.

There was one place in Shawnessy near the movie theater that had good food but it was expensive as hell, especially for the small ammount of food they actually give you.

I second Chico's Tecate Grill. The Tecate Burrito is awesome and their food is really filling. It's Tex-mex not traditional mexican though.
