2016 Draft Review
The Carolina Hurricanes started the 2016 draft by trading away veteran defender Denis Wiideman to the New York Rangers a 2nd Round Pick (Wade Allison). The move Free's up 5M in cap space and allows the Hurricanes some wiggle room with the accountancy of the upcoming GRIDS. Wideman was slotted to be in the 3rd paring and the '
Canes just weren't interested in allotting that amount of cap space for that roles.
RD 1 PK 15 LW Keiffer Bellows
NHL RD 1 PK 19 New York Islanders
The Hurricanes were looking to select either Bellows or 6th overall selection Clayton Keller. With Keller quickly eliminated by the penguins the '
Canes were hoping for Bellows name not be called. As Jakob Chychrun began to drop in the draft the
Canes started getting worried that the rearguard would be available by the 15th pick. The
Canes scouting staff have been ripping apart the defenseman all year and ironically it was looking like they were going to end up drafting him. Thankfully he was picked 3 selections before and Bellows once again became the number one target.
Canes got lucky here and very happy about the section

NHL RD 3 PK 68 Arizona Coyoetes
This was a funny pick, with the addition of the 49th pick the
Canes owned 3 of the next 4 selections. We had originally targeted goaltender Carter Hart but with the realization that goalies were being avaided in the draft we changed our mind and would leave it for the 3rd round and "sneak" in a free pick. More of a panic pick and threw in a name that we though wouldn't be available in the 3rd. Don't you know it the Wild select Hard with the only slection from our 3 out of 4 picks.
Canes made a mistake and should have just try not to get too strategical and just followed our list.
RD2 PK 48 C Dillon Dube
NHL RD 2 PK 56 Calgary Flames

RD2 PK 49 RW Wade Allison
NHL RD 2 PK 52 Philadelphia Flyers
With Hart now being selected and
Canes getting a reminder what happens when you start over thinking things we just went out and selected the next highlighted players on our list. Forget in the rankings and just draft what I want to make sure I don't walk away from the draft with
RD3 PK 65 RW Vladimir Kuznetsov
NHL RD x PK x
Once again the Hurricanes had a free pick and with no one on board that we had targeting for the selection remaining we had a free short to try and hit a home run. This is where we originally hoped to land Hart Big Swing and miss, Oh well you have to take those chances
RD3 PK 75 G Tyler Parsons
NHL RD 2 PK 54 Calgary Flames
The
Canes then selected who we thought was the 2nd best goalie in the draft. Leading up to the draft I wasn't sure about Parsons as I wasn't sure how much of his success was due to the team around him but you couldn't denie his performance in the overtime in the championship game of the Memorial Cup. . That alone was worth the risk
RD5 PK 135 C Brandon Saigeon
NHL RD x PK x
Brandon Saigeon I knew wasn't going to be drafted in the CPHL draft/ He was the 4th overall selection of the Bellville Bulls in the OHL priority Draft a couple years ago but has had a rough time since then. When The Bulldogs traded away Harper this year I thought the opportunity would give Saigeon more ice time to find his game.. He ended up injuring himself and so far his OHL career has been a disappointment. I really wanted the kid and I'm more cheering for him rather then trying to get value out of a late selection
RD5 PK 150 C Jacob Bush
